Millersville, Pa. - Starting pitchers
Jim McDade and
Reid Anderson kept the PSAC's top lineup off the bases and off the board, helping the No. 2 Millersville baseball team to 4-2 and 13-2 wins over No. 12 East Stroudsburg Saturday at home. The doubleheader sweep sealed a key PSAC East series win for the Marauders.
In the first-ever match-up between two top-15 teams on Millersville's campus, the Marauders (26-3, 10-2 PSAC East) received outstanding starts from its No. 3 and No. 4 starters. McDade (5-0) tossed his first complete game of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter, extending his streak to 38.1 consecutive innings without a walk issued. Anderson (4-0) followed by giving up just one run on four hits and three walks and striking out seven in six innings.
The Marauder lineup provided the necessary run support. Catcher
Mitch Stoltzfus delivered a clutch RBI single in the fifth inning of game one keep his hitting streak alive and then pushed it to 27 games with a 4-for-4 showing in the nightcap. Stoltzfus's 27 consecutive games with a hit is tied for the second longest in PSAC history.
Senior shortstop
Tyler Orris, who made his 197th and 198th consecutive starts, went 1-for-2 with a RBI, run and stolen base in the opener and then passed Marauder alum Derek Kline for second place on the program's all-time hits list with 249 after delivering three hits--and his first homer of the season--in the nightcap. He totaled a career-high six RBIs in game two and finished with seven on the season, pushing him over 100 for his career. He also took over first place all-time in runs scored with 169, passing hall of famer Ryan Brink (167), who had held the record since 2000.
East Stroudsburg opened game one with a RBI single from Drew Hercik and a RBI single from Casey Saverio in the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead. Millersville stranded six runners in the first three innings and had just one run. Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Orris provided the spark the Marauders needed. He led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. With two outs,
Mitch Stoltzfus doubled with the bases empty.
Dan Stoltzfus followed with a RBI single, putting the Marauders in front, 3-2. Millersville added another run in the sixth on a fielding error.
McDade sat down the final eight batters he faced, including 1-2-3 sixth and seventh innings.
The Marauders wasted no time taking a lead in game two. The first five batters of the inning reached base and four of them scored. Eleven Marauders went to the plate in the inning and Orris put the finishing touches on a seven-run first when he smacked a bases-loaded double over the head of the left fielder.
The runs kept coming in the second on RBIs from
Chas McCormick,
David Summerfield and
Ted Williams. Orris drilled a three-run homer in the fourth to cap a six RBI game. The Marauders took a 13-1 lead into the seventh.
Anderson overcame a shaky start to turn in a quality start. The first two batters he faced reached base but he responded by striking out the side. He gave up three consecutive singles to the top of the lineup in the third but escaped the jam with a flyout and one of his seven strikeouts. Anderson did not allow a hit over the final 12 outs.
Orris finished game two a triple shy of the cycle.
Mitch Stoltzfus produced two doubles and two singles. Summerfield drove in three.
The Marauders step outside of PSAC East play on Tuesday with a road game at Philadelphia.
