Millersville, Pa. – Thanks to dominant pitching and timely hitting, Millersville softball swept the nationally-ranked West Chester Golden Rams for the first time since April 18, 2014 with scores of 1-0 and 3-1.
Entering Saturday, No. 12 West Chester (39-5, 11-2 PSAC East) was the highest scoring team (297 runs scored) and had the top team ERA (1.52) in the entire PSAC and had not dropped a conference game all season. Millersville (22-14, 9-5 PSAC East) knocked off the top team in the East thanks in large part to dominant pitching from senior
Brianna Andraos who gave up only one run on 10 hits across 14 innings of work on Saturday afternoon. Andraos certainly put herself in discussion for PSAC East Pitcher of Week as she improved to 12-8 on the season. Â The sweep snapped WCU's 19-game winning streak.
Millersville's lone run in Game 1 came via the walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Maria Spinosa got things started with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a
Raeann Buskey sacrifice bunt. The very next batter,
Megan McCurdy blooped a single to right field that scored Spinosa.
Spinosa was the lone Marauder with multiple hits as she was 2-for-3 at the dish. The Marauders only stranded three base runners compared to West Chester who left six runners on base.
In the circle, Andraos threw 97 pitches across seven shutout innings, allowed four hits, had four strikeouts and only walked a pair of Golden Ram batters.
Brooke Harner (15-1) lost her first game of the season and gave up just the one earned run on five hits.
In game two, the Marauders jumped on WCU starter Katie Erb in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs.
Kelsey Campbell got the inning started with a double to right center field and scored when Spinosa doubled down the right field line. Spinosa once again advanced to second on a
Raeann Buskey sacrifice bunt and scored on a
Jaynie Black RBI double.
The Golden Rams got on the board in the top of the third when Madison Kelly drove in teammate Shannon Grey to make it 2-1. Millersville added an insurance run in in the bottom of the fifth on a
Kelsey Campbell RBI single.
Andraos once again twirled a gem for the Marauders as she scattered six hits across seven innings, while striking out four. The senior lowered her ERA to 2.00, which ranks 13th in the PSAC and her eight shutouts on the season is the top mark within the conference.
The Marauders will look to keep it rolling with a non-conference doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom on Monday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
