Bloomsburg, Pa. - Millersville baseball extended its winning streak to 12 and completed completed its second consecutive PSAC Eastern Division series sweep by out-slugging homestanding Bloomsburg by scores of 15-9 and 10-7 Saturday afternoon.
The two teams combined for 51 hits and 41 runs in the twinbill. Millersville (35-3, 18-2 PSAC East) scored double-digit runs in both games of the doubleheader for the second time this season.
Ben Snyder went 6-for-9 with a homer, double and three RBIs on the day.
David Summerfield and
Chas McCormick both went 5-for-7. McCormick also walked twice, had two doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Millersville has swept Bloomsburg in each of the last two seasons, scoring at least eight runs in seven of the eight games.
Millersville fell behind 3-0 in the second inning of game one, but quickly rallied with a four-run third to take the lead. The Marauders scored four more in the fourth on two-run home runs from
Mitch Stoltzfus and Snyder. The runs continued to pile up with a two-run homer from
Dan Stoltzfus in the fifth, four in the seventh, including a two-run single from McCormick, and one in the seventh on a RBI ground out from
Tyler Webster.
Bloomsburg's starter was chased after giving up four in 2 1/3 innings and the bullpen gave up 11 more. Marauder starter
Jim McDade improved to 7-0 after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings. Millersville led by 10 entering the final inning but Bloomsburg picked up four off the Marauder bullpen in its final at bat.
The Marauders built a big lead again in game two, scoring seven in the top of the seventh to take a 10-1 lead into Bloomsburg's final at bat. The Marauder sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, totaled six hits including a string of four consecutive doubles from D. Stoltzfus,
Jeremy Musser,
Aaron Taylor and Summerfield. While the win seemed well in hand, Bloomsburg the bottom of the inning nerve-racking for the Marauders.
A single and three consecutive walks pushed the first run in. Tyler Benson cleared the bases with a double. Austin Edgette singled in a run and Ryan Kirman singled in another to make the score 10-7 with no outs and the tying run at the plate. Marauder reliever
Logan Grant quieted the Huskies, however. After giving up back-to-back singles he got back-to-back Huskies to pop out to
Ted Williams at second base. But another single loaded the bases. With the winning run at the plate, though, Grant induced a ground ball to end the threat.
The final score betrayed the work of Marauder starter
Reid Anderson (6-0), who tossed six strong innings. He did not allow an earned run and did not walk a batter while striking out five.
McCormick finished game two with a single, double, triple, walk, two runs and two RBIs. Summerfield also drove in two with a 3-for-4 game.
