Miller, Shannon Stymie Huskies for Sweep

Millersville, Pa. - Brandon Miller threw six shutout innings and struck out 11, and freshman Cordell Shannon followed with six innings and one run allowed, helping the No. 2-ranked Millersville baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Bloomsburg by scores of 8-0 and 6-1.

Millersville, now 33-3 overall and 16-2 in the PSAC East, extended its home winning streak to 22 on the strength of its starting pitching duo. Bloomsburg entered the series with the third-best batting average in the PSAC and the second-most homers. But Miller (7-1) matched a career-high with his 11 strikeouts and allowed only three hits. Shannon (6-1) ended each of the first three innings with a strikeout and did not allow a run until the sixth. His sixth win of the season sets a Millersville freshman record for wins.

The Marauder bats totaled 21 hits despite not having senior shortstop and leadoff hitter Tyler Orris in the lineup. Orris missed both games and his program record streak of 203 consecutive starts came to an end. Redshirt freshman Tyler Webster made his first career appearance at shortstop and performed admirably, going 1-for-3 with a run and steal in the opener and 1-for-2 with a run in the nightcap.

The Marauders opened a sizable lead in the third inning of game one. They scored seven runs after sending 11 batters to the plate. Dan Neff, Dan Stoltzfus and Ben Snyder all had two-run base hits, and David Summerfield singled in a run. D. Stoltzfus added the eighth run in the fourth when Neff scored on his sacrifice fly.

Miller was dominant. Five of the first six outs were strikeouts. He fanned at least one in each of his six innings. He has now struck out 21 in his last two starts. Matt Binder entered in the seventh and pitched a perfect inning.

The third inning was again the key inning for Millersville in game two. Webster led off with a single and eventually scored on a Neff sacrifice fly. Chas McCormick drove in a run as well. Ted Williams doubled in a run in the fourth, McCormick did the same in the fifth, and after a Jeremy Musser sacrifice fly, Neff hit a solo home run to cap the scoring in the sixth.

Bloomsburg threatened with a runner in scoring position in each of the first four innings. The stickiest spot came in the third when Millersville committed two errors and put runners on the corners. Shannon answered with a punch out to end the inning. Bloomsburg put runners on the corners again in the fourth, but a ground out to Williams at second got Shannon out of the inning. Shannon handed the ball to Mike Mock after six innings. Mock gave up two hits but escaped without a run scored.

The Marauders head to Bloomsburg Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
