Softball Sweeps Bowie State in Non-Conference Action

Bowie, Md. – The Millersville softball team spoiled the Bowie State home opener on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Bulldogs 9-0 and 6-3 in non-conference play. The Marauders improve to 13-9 overall and the loss dips the Bulldogs season record to 8-12 overall.

Megan Hallock led the Marauders in game one with four hits in four at-bats while Heather Lutz and Melanie Snyder contributed three hits apiece in the win. The Marauders tied a season-high with 16 combined hits as nine different players notched at least a single. Brianna Andraos (6-6) went the distance in the circle, striking out seven and walking only one.

Millersville scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Melanie Snyder scored on a Lutz single through the right side of the infield. The Marauders pushed five more runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning. Maria Spinosa blew the game wide open with her two-run single. Two batters later, Megan Hallock laced a double to center field that scored Spinosa and the scoring concluded on another Lutz single that scored Hallock and Melanie Snyder. Millersville plated another three runs in the top of the seventh inning to account for the final margin of the 9-0 win.

The Marauder bats remained hot in game two as they got scoring underway in the top of the second following a Hallock double, plating Spinosa. Jaime Trewhella stroked a double and advanced to third to lead off the third inning and scored on a bunt single by Brittany Smith to give the Marauders a 2-0 advantage.

Bowie State rallied for two runs off of Cassidy Pinchorski (7-3) in the bottom of the third, but the Marauders added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning only to have the Bulldogs trim the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning.

Millersville added two insurance runs on a two-run single off of the bat of Jaime Trewhella in the top of the fifth to secure the 6-3 victory.

Trewehlla had a career-high three hits and three RBI in the nightcap.

Millersville remains on the road and returns to PSAC action with a doubleheader against East Stroudsburg scheduled for Friday. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
