Millersville, Pa. - No. 4 Millersville baseball extended its winning streak to 11 and set a new program standard for best start to a season by sweeping Saint Rose Thursday at Cooper Park by scores of 3-2 and 5-3. The Marauders needed some late-inning magic in the opener, receiving a walk-off hit from
Jeremy Musser in the bottom of the 10th, and in the nightcap, a quick start and a two-run homer from
Mitch Stoltzfus led to the win.
The previous best start to a season came in 2001, when the club opened 11-1. The 12th win in 13 games wasn't the only history made Thursday. Senior shortstop
Tyler Orris totaled eight assists in the doubleheader, pushing his career total to 546 and past Torrey Bomberger (1997-2000) for a new Millersville record. Orris also moved into second on the PSAC's career list. Not only was Orris perfect in the field, he also produced quite an afternoon at the plate, going 6-for-8 with a walk. His career hit totals moved to 224, past Millersville Athletic Hall of Fame member Ryan Brink into third place all-time.
Millersville entered the day averaging 10 runs per game, but the lineup was quiet for much of the opener. Philip Zdanowski held the Marauders to just three hits over six shutout innings, and Millersville entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 1-0. But
Mitch Stoltzfus led off with a single, and
David Summerfield slapped a double over the left fielder, allowing Stoltzfus to score from first. After a ground out moved Summerfield to third, Zdanowski uncorked a wild pitch, and Summerfield scampered home for the go-ahead run.
Marauder starter
Brandon Miller was outstanding again, although his streak of consecutive innings without an earned run allowed ended at 23. Looking to polish off a complete game effort in the ninth, Miller gave up a lead off single. Saint Rose bunted the runner into scoring position, and after a strikeout, with two outs and two strikes, Matt Ungerland blooped a single to right, tying the game at 2-2. Millersville went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extras.
After walking the leadoff batter of the 10th, reliever
Logan Grant settled and escaped the inning with the score still tied.
Ted Williams jump-started the 10th with a one-out single. Orris followed with one of his own, and Musser hit a slicing liner to left field that rolled to the wall. Williams scored without a play at the plate, and Millersville won its first extra-inning game of 2016.
It took Millersville until the seventh to get on the board on the opener but that wasn't the case in game two. Orris, Musser and
Chas McCormick started the game with hits, and
Dan Stoltzfus doubled in a run. Summerfield's infield single brought home another, giving Millersville an early 3-0 advantage.
Mitch Stoltzfus crushed his third homer of the season in the third, giving the Marauders a 5-2 advantage.
Both of Saint Rose's early runs came on solo homers. It added an unearned run in the fourth, cutting Millersville's lead to two. But freshman starter
Cordell Shannon (2-1) seven consecutive batters, and
Cody Stoneback came on in the seventh for his second save. Shannon scattered nine hits and gave up three runs over six innings. Orris and Musser both went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Millersville returns to Cooper Park Friday to take on Le Moyne at 2:30 p.m.
