Shippensburg, Pa. - Millersville women's basketball trailed homestanding Shippensburg by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's PSAC Quarterfinal match-up. The Marauders charged back, closing the gap to one possession on four occasions, but Lauren Gold and the Raiders did just enough to hand the Marauders a 58-56 loss.
Shippensburg (21-6) advances to the PSAC Semifinal while the Marauders' (19-9) conference tournament comes to an end. Millersville was ranked No. 9 in last week's NCAA Atlantic Region ranking and now must wait to find out its postseason fate.
Shippensburg pulled in front for good just over five minutes into the contest and stretch the lead to 15 (39-24) four minutes into the third quarter. Millersville was outscored 13-4 and Ship shot 6-for-8 in the first four minutes out of the halftime break. Millersville battled back, though, slowly chipping Shippensburg's advantage to three after
Shelby Reimer hit two free throws and
Tyisha White converted a transition bucket with 4:31 remaining. The Raiders answered with a two and a free throw from Morgan Griffith, and Millersville went more than two minutes without a point.
But with 2:08 remaining,
Celeste Robinson converted a three-point play to bring Millersville within 53-50. Gold, who scored 17 on 4-of-5 shooting and made all six of her foul shots, scored four of Ship's final six points, and she put the Raiders' lead back to five.
Shelby Reimer retaliated at the other end, and Ship's Colleen Young made just one-of-two free throws. Six seconds later, Robinson slashed for two, bringing Millersville to within 56-54. Forced to foul, the Marauders sent Gold to the line, where she knocked down both, putting the game away for Shippensburg.
Millersville outscored Shippensburg 20-14 and forced five turnovers in the final quarter. Reimer scored all 13 of her points in the second half. Robinson scored 11 of her 15 in the second half as well. Millersville, however, shot 3-of-16 from three and connected on just 5-of-12 free throws.
Shippensburg's win Tuesday gave it a 2-1 advantage in the season series.
