Florence, S.C. - With the score tied at 2-2 in the top of the eighth, Millersville's
Jeremy Musser led off the inning with a solo home run, breaking the tie with Saint Rose and helping the Marauders to a 4-2 win--their seventh in a row.
Musser's home run was followed by a two-out double from
Dan Stoltzfus. He came around to score on a single from
David Summerfield. That two-run lead was enough for the Marauders as
Logan Grant (1-0) closed the door with three shutout innings, allowing just three baserunners and striking out two.
Grant avoided a jam in the bottom of the ninth after plunking the first batter. He quickly rolled a 6-4-3 double play to clear the bases. He hit another batter but picked up the final out of the game with a ground out to
Ted Williams at second base. Junior
Matt Ulrich also helped in relief. He entered in the sixth with runners on first and second and no outs. Ulrich struck out the first batter he faced, intentionally walked the second to load the bases, and then pitched his way out of the predicament with a
Tyler Orris to Stoltzfus double play.
Freshman
Cordell Shannon turned in five strong innings in the no decision. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Both runs he allowed came in the second inning after giving up a single and a walk to two of the first three batters.
It was Millersville that scored first. The late-game heroics from Musser was preceded by a walk and run scored on a
Chas McCormick RBI single in the top of the first. The Marauders trailed 2-1 until the fifth when with two outs Orris singled, stole a base and scored following a Saint Rose throwing error. That set the stage for Millersville's eighth-inning rally.
Musser and Summerfield led Millersville at the plate with two hits apiece.
The Marauders return to action on Saturday against Saint Rose.
