Wilmington, Pennsylvania - After an historical stretch of 3-point shooting in its recent three-game winning streak, the Millersville men's basketball team was due for an off-night. And while Millersville shot a season-low 29.6 percent from three, it still very nearly escaped Wilmington with a road win. But buckets were scarce, especially in the closing minutes, and the homestanding Wildcats edged the Marauders, 74-69.
Millersville (3-2) had made 43 3-pointers in its previous three wins and made a school record 18 its last time out but connected on 8-of-27 Wednesday night. Millersville also shot just 36.2 percent from the field and 11-of-16 from the free throw line. While reigning PSAC East Player of the Week
Marcus Adkison scored 22 points on 5-of-12 shooting from three, the rest of the team combined to shoot 3-of-15 from behind the arc. The usually accurate
Conrad Chambers (52.0 percent through four games) made 1-of-6 threes and shot 4-of-15 from the field.
Cornell Yarde II's run of four consecutive games in double figures ended with a six-point performance against the Wildcats. Wilmington also controlled the glass, scoring 21 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds.
Millersville entered halftime with a 37-34 lead after Adkison beat the buzzer with his fourth 3-pointer of the half. Despite shooting 2-of-11 from three in the second half, Millersville managed to hold a 48-46 lead with 11:23 left. Wilmington's Brian Adkins hit a three, breaking a 50-50 tie with 10:06 to play, and Millersville never again saw the lead.
Five times in the final six minutes Millersville crept within one point, but the Wildcats answered each time, and it was usually Tyaire Ponzo-Meek. Ponzo-Meek scored 15 of his game-high 25 in this second half. After Yarde slashed for two with 1:31 left, Ponzo-Meek drove for two of his own.
Amadou Kaba knocked down two free throws to make the score 70-69 with 53 seconds to play, and Ponzo-Meek matched Kaba with two free throws of his own 13 seconds later. Trailing by three, Millersville worked Adkison for an open look at three, but his shot from the top of the key missed. Millersville made just two of its final seven shots.
Ponzo-Meek put the Wildcats in front by five with two more free throws in the closing seconds.
Wednesday's game was the start of four-game road swing for the Marauders. They next travel to Seton Hill and California for a weekend back-to-back.
