Wilmington, Del. - Millersville men's basketball trailed Goldey-Beacom by as many as 14 points in Sunday's season-opener, but the Marauders rallied and led by two with 3:05 to play. That's when the rally ran out of gas. Goldey-Beacom scored the game's final five points and pulled away for a 74-69 win.
Cornell Yarde II totaled 16 points and nine rebounds, leading five Marauders (0-1) in double figures. But the Marauders had no answer for Goldey-Beacom's Elijah Tillman, who made 10-of-12 shots for 22 points. Riyan Williams connected on 7-of-9 shots and the duo helped the Lightning shoot 51.1 percent from the field, including 67.9 percent in a first half that saw the Lightning race to a 42-32 advantage.
Tillman and Williams combined for seven of Goldey-Beacom's final seven points, and Williams scored two late buckets that helped the Lightning stave off the Marauders' comeback.
Millersville trailed 50-40 with 16 minutes left, but an
Amadou Kaba lay-up started a 13-0 Marauders' run that included five points from
Conrad Chambers. Chambers scored all 13 of his points in the second half. A Chambers 3-pointer and
Jon Lott free throw put the Marauders in front 53-50. The next nine minutes saw nine lead changes and three ties with neither club leading by more than four. With 3:44 to play,
Amadou Kaba scored to knot the score at 67. Kaba scored on Millersville's next possession to give the Marauders a two-point lead.
Williams retied the game 10 seconds later, and over the final three minutes, Goldey-Beacom outscored the Marauders 7-0. Millersville went 0-for-4 with two turnovers in its last six offensive possessions while Goldey-Beacom made 3-of-5 shots and its only free throw. Millersville's last three shots were missed 3-pointers.
Marcus Adkison made 5-of-9 shots and shot 3-of-5 from three for 13 points and also added five assists. Lott chipped in 13 points and Kaba finished with 10. Yarde played all 40 minutes.
Millersville travels to Loyola for an exhibition game Monday.
