Millersville, Pa. - It was the freshmen that stepped up in Millersville on Sunday as the Marauders beat Queens, 2-0.
Erica Tarsi scored both goals in the win, and Millersville improved to 9-2 on the season.
Tarsi struck first off a successful corner at the 12:32 mark.
Robyn Spatichia took the corner and passed it straight in to Tarsi. The freshman then took one step to get within the circle and fired a shot that found the back of the cage.
"Obviously you only have one shot at it," Tarsi said of the corner, "I received it, and got the shot off."
That goal would not be her only impact in the victory. In a game that was still dangerously close with just over 15 minutes remaining, Tarsi scored again. This time, it came on a fastbreak.
Kyra Brakefield, another first-year player, hit Tarsi with an on-time pass. Tarsi got a stick on the ball, and one-timed it into the back of the net to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead.
"Erica had a great shot," said head coach
Shelly Behrens after the game. "She's a great player."
"I knew I had to get there," Tarsi said. "It was a beautiful pass, perfect pass. Everybody wants to get a pass like that."
The goal would be the last of the day for Millersville, but there were plenty of other opportunities. The Marauders out-shot their opponent 18-0 and totaled 13 corners to Queens' three.Â
Despite not taking a shot, Queens did have opportunities to score, but the suffocating Marauders' defense prevented a good look in Queens' three corners.
Behrens realized how challenging it can be to play a game 24 hours after playing a ranked opponent like East Stroudsburg. "It's about reminding them who they are," said Behrens. "Coming back and finding that intensity."
On Wednesday, the Marauders take on Shippensburg: the only team that is still undefeated in PSAC play. The game will take place at home at 4 p.m.
