No. 1 Ship defeats No. 3 Ville on late goal

Millersville, Pa.- For 68 minutes No. 3 Millersville pounded away on offense, threatening to score multiple times. The Marauders dominated shots, shots on goal, and controlled possession, creating numerous opportunities to score, but they missed one thing: a goal scored. No. 1 Shippensburg got the only goal of the game when Brooke Zieders deflected in a long pass with under a minute to play.

As Suzanne Muller slung a pass from the far right corner of the field, nearly 20 yards out, it looked as if it would fly out of bounds and the game would inch closer to OT.  That's when Zieders made a play. The sophomore found herself in the right place at the right time and redirected Muller's pass into the back of the goal with 1:51 left to play in the game, leaving the Marauders stunned.

"We knew they put her (Zieders) in the game for that reason," said Millersville coach Shelly Behrens after the loss. "I think we could have been smarter on that play, but great effort on her part on that shot."

It was the only shot on goal for Shippensburg, as the Raiders improved to 13-1 on the season and more importantly, 6-0 in the PSAC. The loss drops Millersville to 10-3 (4-2), leaving Millersville with a shot at the PSAC top seed, but Ship in the driver seat for that sought-after spot.

"I think we had a championship effort today," said Behrens, "I'd rather lose this game now in October than in November."

The Marauders efforts were not unnoticed by Ship goaltender Ally Mooney, either. Mooney faced eight shots on goal, saving all of them and getting some help from her teammates on two of them.

With 6:25 left to play, Katie Deluca took a follow-up shot after Mooney had come out of the goal to make a play. As Mooney made a diving effort, it became evident that her outstretched arms would not reach the ball. Luckily for her, Shippensburg defender Morgan Gantz had her back, making the stop on the empty net.

It must have been déjà vu for Mooney, who had a similar instance occur only minutes before. In one of Millersville's best chances of the game, Kyra Brakefield's shot nearly found the back of the net with 14:00 remaining in the second half. This time, Mooney ran towards the ball, hitting the ground to thwart Brakefield's shot.

"We've been on this side (against Ship) and we've been on that side," said Behrens. Ship's win snapped a three-game winning streak for the Marauders in the series.

The loss was the second in three games for Millersville (the other coming to No. 4 East Stroudsburg). It is the first time since September of 2012 that the Marauders have had such a stretch.

Millersville returns to action on Saturday to take on Limestone at home at 12 p.m.
