Clarion, Pennsylvania - A slow start and an offensive attack off-night resulted in a 3-1 loss for Millersville volleyball at Clarion Friday evening, 25-11, 25-27, 25-14, 28-26.
Millersville (9-14, 5-7 PSAC) committed a season-high 33 errors and hit a season-low .030 but still managed to push a 14-10 (8-4 PSAC) Clarion squad to four sets and nearly extended the match to five. Millersville mustered just three kills in a lopsided first-set defeat, but responded in set two and forced Clarion to score 28 in the deciding fourth.
Clarion totaled 63 kills while Millersville managed 38.
Erin Harman led the Marauders with 15 kills, but the usually efficient outside hitter (five errors or fewer in 15 matches) committed 17 errors in her 63 attempts. Taylor Braunagel led Clarion with 20 kills.
Millersville used four kills from Harman and
Kelsi Ceriani and a big comeback to win the second set. Clarion looked well on its way to two wins in two sets when it led 20-11. Harman recorded a kill and an ace, and
Haley Butler added a kill as the Marauders scored five consecutive points. Clarion kept its lead at five at 23-18, but Millersville scored the next six points--all with
Lexy Coldsmith serving. An attack error by Clarion gave Millersville its first lead at 24-23. Clarion and Millersville traded points until a Ceriani kill and a
Katie Laughman ace completed the comeback.
After an 11-point defeat in set three to fall behind 2-1, Millersville was one point away from a set four victory, leading 24-20. The Marauders, however, committed three errors in helping Clarion to six consecutive points. Harman tied the match at 25-25, and Millersville had set point again after a Clarion error. But the Golden Eagles rallied with three-straight points--two of which were Braunagel kills.
Millersville has now lost nine matches in four or five sets. The team travels to Indiana (Pa.) Saturday.
