Millersville, Pa.- Limestone goaltender Tabria Cochran tried her best to spoil Senior Day for Millersville, but
Olivia Hershey had other thoughts. After hounding Cochran all game, Hershey finally scored in the 56th minute for what would be the only goal in a 1-0 Marauder win.
Millersville had 21 corners. Millersville had 21 shots. But it still had no goals. This was the case as Maragaret Thorwart went to take the 16th corner of the day for Millersville with 15 minutes remaining. This time, however, was different. Thorwart hit Hershey with a quick pass, and the senior did not hesitate to shoot, firing off a shot from 12 yards out and finding the back of the cage.
"All game we had opportunities," said Hershey, "I took the shot as early as I could this time. I just got it and took it."
The assist was the third of the year for Thorwart, who was one of the eight seniors celebrated today at Millersville on senior day.
"It was a great, strong pass," said Hershey of Thorwart's corner.
The goal was the second game-winner of the year for Hershey, and it couldn't have come on a better day. Senior Day is a day filled with emotion, and as these seniors have grown used to, it was also a day that ended with a victory.
"I don't think I said anything today that I haven't said to them the last four years," said Marauders' coach
Shelly Behrens. "I'm just as proud of them today as I am any day."
Over the past four years, the seniors of Millersville have a record of 68-12 with a national championship. Although the final was 1-0 today, the Marauders showed that same dominance all game long. Millersville finished the game with 22 shots, Limestone had two. The Saints also managed only one shot on goal all game, but it was almost enough to pull them back into it.
As time ticked away, Limestone had a few final chances. With 7:12 remaining, Kate Remley took Limestone's first shot on goal, but Sam Rumler was there to make the save. Again Limestone threatened in the final minute, earning a corner. With less than 30 seconds left, Jette Dieckman had a good angle on goal, but as she swung to one-time it, she missed, and finally Millersville could breathe a sigh of relief as the final seconds ticked away.
The win was not only big for the seniors, but it also comes after Millersville had lost two of three games (two of which were against top 5 teams). The Marauders improved to 11-3 on the year, and regardless of it being senior day, there are still home games remaining.
Millersville's next contest comes at home as they take on Bloomsburg at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
