Erie, Pa. - No. 1-ranked Millersville field hockey amassed 24 goals and 21 penalty corners for a 3-1 win at Mercyhurst Wednesday afternoon.
Millersville (3-0) recorded 21 more shots and drew 16 more penalty corners that the homestanding Lakers (0-3). Seventeen of those shots were placed on goal. It was the third time in as many games that the Marauders totaled at least 20 shots, and they have now out-shot their opponents 70-10 over three games.
Three players accounted for Millersville's three goals. Junior
Arianna Grays scored her first of the season,
Olivia Hershey scored her second and sophomore
Kathleen Bishop scored her third.
Millersville scored early in the both periods. Grays put the Marauders in front 1-0 just 8:21 into the game when she positioned herself on the right side of the cage and poked in a shot taken by Maragret Thorwart. But Mercyhurst retaliated 15 seconds later when Jessica Brandon and Katelyn Smith connected for the equalizer.
The score remained 1-1 until three minutes into the second half when Hershey dribbled down the right end line and beat keeper Sam Takac one-on-one. Bishop gave the Marauders some breathing room at the 51:44 mark when she collected
Megan Donlan's blocked shot and redirected it into the left corner of the goal.
Millersville forced Takac to make 14 saves.
Kylee Bair earned her third win by making one save. Coach
Shelly Behrens stayed undefeated against Mercyhurst, improving to 9-0.
Millersville, which plays four of its first five games at home, returns to Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on Saturday for a 12 p.m. start with Indiana (Pa.).
