Men's Soccer Battles W.Va. Wesleyan to 0-0 Tie

Buckhannon, W.Va. – The Millersville men's soccer team encountered its first road test of the 2015 season at West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon. Neither team was able to find the back of the net as the match finished in a 0-0 conclusion.

Millersville (1-0-1) totaled 13 shots in the contest, placing six of them on goal. The Marauder defense was stingy for the second straight game as Wesleyan (0-1-1) totaled 15 shots, but only seven of the shots were on target.

With the game tied at zero after regulation, the Marauders were eager to place a shot in the back of the net and end the game on a golden goal.

Less than a minute into the first overtime period forward Jaime Vazquez blasted a shot on frame, but was thwarted by Bobcat keeper Luka Pauk. In the 91st and 93rd minutes the Marauders forced corner kick opportunities. However, Marcus Frangakis and Ben Johnston were unable to find any of their teammates within the box as the Wesleyan defense cleared both attempts.

The second overtime period was controlled by the Bobcats. They out-shot Millersville by a 4-1 margin.  The most dangerous opportunities for the home team occurred less than 20 seconds apart from each other. In the 101st minute midfielder Zach Whiting split the Marauder defense and fired a shot on goal that was saved, but a rebound opportunity was available for the Bobcats.  Alex Zidani gathered the ball and fired it right back on net, but keeper Kohl Orner came up big making consecutive saves.

Orner finished the match with six saves and earned his second-straight shutout. The last time Millersville opened the season with two consecutive shutouts was 2011, a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship season.

The Marauders open up PSAC action Wednesday, Sept.  9 when they travel to Bloomsburg. First touch is set for 4 p.m.
