Women’s Soccer Nearly Upsets No. 25 Ranked Kutztown

Kutztown, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime defeat to No. 25 Kutztown in the opening match of the 2015 season. The season opener doubled as the first game in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

On a brutally hot August afternoon, both coaches were tasked with managing numerous substitutions in a slow-paced, possession dominated contest. Kutztown (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) entered play as the No. 25 ranked team in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Neither team was able to create a breakthrough goal until the 29th minute. At the 28:10 mark of the first half, Halie Parker ripped a shot from inside the box that ricocheted off the right post and into the back of the net past KU goalkeeper Deanna Messner.

Millersville (0-1, 0-1 PSAC) held on to the 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Statistically, Kutztown enjoyed the better opening half producing seven shots, five on goal, forcing Black & Gold keeper Samantha Wolfe into five saves. Wolfe finished the afternoon with eight saves.

The Golden Bears scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute when Taylor Burt converted on a header that was setup by a free kick pass from Logan Kramer.

Following back-and-forth action for the rest of the second half, the teams were forced to head into overtime tied at 1-1.

Kutztown was able to gain possession at the start of the extra period and a quality cross from just outside via Alaina Curry setup Alyssa Ryan for the game-winning effort at the 91:03 mark.

Millersville is back in action on Saturday, August 5 when the Marauders host Bloomsburg in its home opener. The Huskies dropped a 3-0 decision to West Chester on Friday as both teams will look for their first win of the 2015 season. Kickoff from Pucillo Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
