Millersville, Pa. – The No. 10 Millersville men's soccer team continued its best start in program history shutting out the West Chester Golden Rams, 3-0. The Marauders scored two goals in the first half and added another insurance effort in the second as they improve to 8-0-1 overall and 6-0 in the PSAC. West Chester dropped to 3-4-2 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Marauders seized the momentum from the get-go, 53 seconds into the match
Justin Torres-Groover whipped a cross into the box and
Ben Johnston dove and headed the ball into the back of the net past WCU keeper Matt Palmer. The Golden Rams never recovered after giving up the fastest goal of the season for Millersville as WCU were dominated until the closing whistle.
In the 20th minute, Millersville added an insurance effort via the head of senior forward
Jaime Vazquez. The sequence of events leading up to the goal included a corner kick that was initially headed by
Christopher Sosa and then re-headed by Vazquez into the bottom right corner of the net. Sosa earned the assist. Vazquez the reigning PSAC Player of the Week added a tally to his PSAC leading 11 goals. The mark represents a career-high for the Tulpehocken product.
Jaxson Burns then finished off the scoring with just 28 seconds left on the clock in the second half. Burns received a brilliant through ball from
Dylan Fogerty in which led him into the open space of the box as Burns ripped the shot scoring his second colligate goal.
Millersville out-shot the visitors by a 17-12 margin and the Marauders were even more efficient at placing the ball on target holding an 11-3 advantage. The victory also marked the second shutout and sixth of the season as the Black & Gold have only given up a combined five goals through nine matches.
Goalkeeper
Kohl Orner was hardly tested in net recording just three saves in the shutout victory. Orner now has a PSAC leading six shutouts on the season and his goal against average (0.54) is also the top mark within the conference.
Earlier today, head coach
Steve Widdowson's squad climbed up five spots in the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) Division II Poll and are now ranked No. 10. The Marauders will have a quick turnaround, jumping back into non-conference action with a match against Goldey-Beacom on Thursday, Oct. 1. Kickoff from Pucillo Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
