Man up Marauders Dominate Goldey-Beacom

Millersville Pa. – In arguably it's most dominating performance of the season, the No. 10 Millersville men's soccer team shutout Goldey-Beacom, 2-0 on a rainy and chilly evening at Pucillo Field. The Marauders improve to 9-0-1 overall and remain 6-0 in the PSAC. The non-conference loss dropped Goldey-Beacom to 3-6 overall.

The Marauders began the match dominating the possession and flow of the game as they immediately began to pepper Lightning goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla with threatening shots.  Justin Torres-Groover nearly put the Black & Gold on the board in the first minute as Bismilla was forced into making a diving save.

After seven more shots, including a Ben Johnston effort that ricocheted off of the post, Millersville found it's breakthrough in the 28th minute. Ryan Phelps gathered a corner kick cross on the left side of the box and immediately whipped in a cross of his own that was headed into the back of the net by forward Jaime Vazquez. The goal marked the fourth game-winner by Vazquez and his 12th overall goal on the season, which ties him for the top goal scorer in Division I, II and III. Vazquez finished the match tied with Marcus Frangakis in shots as each fired five on Thursday evening.

The Lightning's chances of a comeback took a severe hit in the 35th minute when their keeper Suhail Bismilla was shown a red card. Bismilla was several feet outside of his 18-yard box when Jaime Vazquez fired a shot that forced Bismilla to use his hands in reckless fashion. Goldey-Beacom used Joe Traynor as its keeper for the rest of the match.

Millersville carried its 1-0 lead into the second half and scored an insurance effort in the 55th minute. On the counter attack, Christopher Sosa ripped a shot from 35-yards out that dipped just below the crossbar for his first goal of the season.  Jaime Vazquez was credited with the assist after playing a beautiful through ball to Sosa.

The 2-0 victory represented the Marauders third-straight shutout. Kohl Orner earned the win in goal for the Millersville as he has been the goalkeeper for each shutout and his name is now entrenched in the programs record books for the sixth most shutouts in program history. With four saves in the match, Orner lowered his goals against average to 0.49.

The Marauders out-shot Goldey-Beacom by a 21-9 margin as the Lightning only registered three shot attempts after their starting keeper was shown the red card. Millersville also produced 12 corner kicks compared to the visitors' one.

Coach Steve Widdowson now has six days to train his squad for their next match on Oct. 7. The Marauders are scheduled to return to PSAC action as they host the Lock Haven Bald Eagles with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m.
