Millersville, Pa. - No. 1 Millersville scored in the opening three minutes, and with another staunch defensive effort that was the only score the Marauders needed to defeat Mercyhurst at a rainy Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The win pushed Millersville (8-0, 3-0 PSAC) to within one of tying the school record for most consecutive wins to start a season. It was also the team's fifth shutout in a row, marking the first time the feat has been accomplished since 1950. The Marauders held a 17-1 advantage in shots and did not allow a shot on goal for the fourth time in the last five games. Only two shots on goal (both by West Chester) have been recorded against the Marauders over the last 364:23.
Margaret Thorwart, coming off of a two-goal performance against Slippery Rock, scored the game's lone goal after just 2:47 of play. A penalty corner insert from
Lauren Gerhart found
Olivia Hershey at the top of the circle. Hershey then pushed a long pass to the left side where Thorwart gathered the ball and ripped a shot that found its way past Laker keeper Sam Takac.
Millersville drew 12 more penalty corners and put six more shots on goal, but Takac managed to save them all.
The backline of Millersville's defense, comprised of
Taylor Parker,
Aubrey Hartman and
Kayla Bixler were key in keeping Mercyhurst from scoring. The Lakers' best--and only--look came in the 52nd minute off of a penalty corner. Katelyn Smith's redirection sailed high over
Samantha Rumler.
Olivia Hershey led Millersville with four shots. She put two of the shots on goal and one clanked off the right post.
Millersville faces a busy weekend with home games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Marauders and IUP will pick up at the start of double overtime to complete its rained out game from earlier this season on Friday at 4 p.m. The Marauders then host Seton Hill on Saturday and step outside conference play to face Newberry on Sunday.
