Millersville, Pa. - No. 1-ranked Millersville field hockey posted its school-record sixth consecutive shutout in a 2-0 win over Seton Hill Saturday at home, boosting its record to 10-0 to set a new mark for consecutive wins to start a season.
The previous shutout record had stood since 1950. The 1973, 2013 and 2014 clubs started 9-0, but Millersville had never been 10-0 until Saturday. Senior
Lauren Gerhart's first goal of the season was the game-winner, and junior
Olivia Hershey tacked on a score in the second half.
Millersville held Seton Hill to just one shot and for the fifth time in the last six games Millersville's opponent was held without a shot on goal. Millersville has surrendered only two shots on goal over the last 505 minutes of play and has out-shot teams 100-18 over that span.
The Marauders led 15-1 in shots and 18-1 in corners. Seton Hill carried the ball into its scoring zone only a handful of times and did not record a shot until the 64th minute. That shot from Nicole DeLuca was blocked by
Taylor Parker, who often stifled Seton Hill's offensive attack.
Millersville nearly scored twice in the first 14 minutes, placing four shots on goal, two of which were saved by defenders behind goalkeeper. The Marauders took just two more shots the rest of the first half, failing to take advantage of its eight penalty corners. Seton Hill withstood four consecutive corners in the closing minute of the half.
10 minutes into the second period, Millersville broke through. A centering pass from
Courtney Weaver found
Lauren Gerhart, who shot low past Jane Eberhardt. Hershey built the lead to 2-0 with just under eight minutes to play. Off of a penalty corner,
Margaret Thorwart ripped a rising shot directly at Hershey. Hershey's back was to the goal and was able to redirect Thorwart's shot into the left corner of the cage. It was her third goal of the season.
Millersville has now outscored its opponents 22-5 on the season. It hosts Newberry Sunday at 1 p.m.
