Erie, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team traveled to Erie Pa. on Saturday evening and a 49th minute goal by the Gannon Golden Knights would be the difference as the Marauders lost, 1-0.
At the 49:19 mark, a Sammy Valloud pass slipped behind the Millersville defense and forward Michelle Genetin gathered the ball and dipped the shot underneath the cross bar from 20-yards out for the lone goal of the game.
Millersville (3-5, 3-5 PSAC) was forced into playing plenty of defense on Saturday evening as it was out-shot by a 25-3 margin. The Golden Knights were able to place 13 of their 25 shots on the goal frame. Marauder keeper Samantha Wolfe finished the match with 12 saves. All five of Millersville's losses have been by one goal and three have come against nationally-ranked opponents.
Gannon (8-0, 7-0 PSAC) picked up its seventh win in the conference this season as the Golden Knights hold their highest national ranking (No. 4) in the program's 29-year history.
The Golden Knights began the match attacking, Ally Sharpe nearly put her team on the board with a 10th minute shot, but Samantha Wolfe stood tall deflecting the one-on-one shot over the crossbar. The crossbar was Wolfe's friend again in the 30th minute, Becca Albert ripped a shot from 30-yards out that hit the right corner of the crossbar.
The Marauders recorded all three of their shots in the second period. Megan Kelley nearly provided the equalizer in the 64th minute, but Gannon goalkeeper Shannon Differ made a sliding save.
Millersville returns to action Sept. 29 when it hosts West Chester at Pucillo Field. The Golden Rams won their match on Saturday shutting out Shippensburg and sports a 6-2 overall record. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m
