Millersville, Pa. - Nothing less can be expected from a rivalry like Millersville and West Chester field hockey. The first Division II field hockey game ever broadcast on an ESPN affiliate lived up to the billing as the No. 2-ranked Marauders defeated West Chester 1-0 on a sudden victory goal in overtime Wednesday evening.
It was the fifth consecutive time that Millersville and West Chester met as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation, and for the fifth time in the last seven meetings, the game needed extra time to be decided. After a scoreless 70 minutes, Marauder junior
Arianna Grays took a feed from sophomore
Courtney Weaver and deposited the game-winner in the back of the cage.
Grays' third goal in her last two games came just 5:14 into the overtime period. Weaver carried the ball to the left of goalkeeper Sarah Krause, drawing a defender. Her pass made its way through traffic onto the stick of Grays who ended the game.
"We were wanting to stretch the field a little and then look for a hard pass inside," said head coach
Shelly Behrens. "We got it in, it was a second touch, and Arianna put the ball in. It's what we do every day in practice...They really played their hearts out tonight."
Millersville came out of the gates as the aggressor, totaling five shots in the first 14 minutes of play. The Marauders, however, managed just one more shot the rest of regulation. Neither goalkeeper was tested much. Krause made two saves, and
Samantha Rumler, making her first career start for Millersville, stopped two shots--one in the first half and one in overtime.
West Chester produced the first offensive chance of overtime when Mary Spisak cranked a shot that Rumler batted away. Less than three minutes later, Grays tallied the game-winner.
Millersville has now won seven of the last nine games against West Chester. Six of the last seven have been decided by one goal.
"I love playing West Chester," said Behrens. "What a great night for Division II field hockey and a great night for field hockey in general. To be the first game on ESPN3. (West Chester) challenges us in ways that we can't challenge ourselves in practice...They definitely make us a better team.
The Marauders travel to Slippery Rock on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
