Slippery Rock, Pa. – The Millersville men's soccer team scored two unanswered goals which propelled it to a 2-1 victory over Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon at Egli Field.
Slippery Rock (4-2, 2-1 PSAC) came into Saturday's matchup winners of three out of its last four games and began the game as the aggressors in an extremely physical match. The Rock was able to get on the board in the 32
nd minute when Stephen McConahy whipped the ball across the goal where Peter Boylan finished it off. The goal marked the first of the season for Boylan.
Minutes later, forward
Jaime Vazquez earned a penalty kick opportunity after a Slippery Rock defender fouled a Marauder within the box. Vazquez converted on the penalty kick for his fifth goal on the season. The Tulpehocken product now has 12 points--the second most in the PSAC--off of five goals and two assists.
The score remained 1-1 into the halftime break. From a statistical standpoint, Millersville had the better first half as it held an 8-4 advantage in shots.
Marcus Frangakis scored the game-winner in the 64
th minute. Frangakis earned prime positioning at the top of the box where he ripped a shot that beat Slippery Rock keeper Kyle Hoffer. The goal marked the first of the season for the sophomore midfielder as seven Marauders have now scored at least one goal a piece.
Millersville improves to 5-0-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Black & Gold are the lone team in the PSAC that boasts a perfect record in conference play.
Goalkeeper
Kohl Orner was superb in net as he recorded five saves, four of which occurred in the second half preserving the Marauder victory. Orner has allowed just three goals in six games this season.
Millersville continues it's three-game road trip with a match against Pitt-Johnstown. The Mountain Cats sport a 0-6 overall record and are 0-2 in the PSAC. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
