Second Half Comeback Stymied by the Warriors
9/15/2015 9:43:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Millersville, Pa. – East Stroudsburg buried two early first-half goals, and it proved to be enough to hold off the surging Millersville women's soccer team. The Warriors walked away with a 2-1 victory at Pucillo Field on Tuesday evening.
East Stroudsburg improved to 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Marauders drop to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC.
The first goal of the match was tallied in the eighth minute when sophomore Sammi Ortiz scored to put the Warriors ahead 1-0. Ortiz received the ball from Sammi Jo Hughes who sent it to the top of the box where Ortiz was able to fire it past the outstretched arms of Samantha Wolfe.
Later in the half, senior Syrandin Deere Vester scored off a corner kick to give the Warriors the two goal advantage. It was just Deere Vester's second goal of the season and the fifth of her colligate career. The Warriors brought the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Black & Gold entered the second half looking like a completely different team as they kept ESU on its heels for most of the period. The Marauders were able to attack in threatening positions using its pace up the field where it gained numerous corner kick opportunities. Millersville held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks in the second half and a 6-4 advantage for the match.
The Marauders finally got on the board in the 77th minute when a Savannah Hall cross bounced to Stacie Hallinan who one-touched the ball past ESU keeper Jules Harris. The goal marked the first of Hallinan's colligate career.
Junior goalkeeper Samantha Wolfe was solid in net recording nine saves in the match and now has 42 saves in the 2015 season. East Stroudsburg, the reigning PSAC champion, improved to 24-2-1 overall and 19-2 in PSAC regular season games and 22-2 against PSAC schools in all competitions since the start of last season.
Next, Millersville returns to Pucillo Field where it will host the Clarion Golden Eagles on Saturday, Sept. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
