Millersville, Pa. – Ben Johnston scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute as the Millersville men's soccer team tailed a 1-0 victory over the No. 17-ranked East Stroudsburg Warriors on Tuesday afternoon.
The Marauders handed East Stroudsburg (4-1, 2-1 PSAC) its first loss of the season after a 4-0 start. The Warriors were listed as the No. 17 in this week's edition of the NSCAA Division II poll released earlier Tuesday. Millersville (4-0-1, 2-0 PSAC) certainly boosted its stock with the win over ESU as it received seven votes in the NSCAA poll, but remain unranked.
Millersville dictated the flow of the match from the start, but neither team was able to find a breakthrough and went into the halftime break knotted at 0-0. The Black & Gold out-shot ESU by a 10-7 margin during the first half and had an 18-11 advantage by the end of the game.
Johnston fired the eventual game-winner nearly 20 minutes into the second half with te assist coming from forward
Jaime Vazquez. The goal was set up by Vazquez who flicked the ball forward onto Johnston's right foot where he fired the shot into the back of the net past goalkeeper William Boerema. The goal marked the first of the season for Johnston, who now has eight collegiate goals.
Goalkeeper
Kohl Orner had four saves in the win and notched his fourth shutout of the season. Through five matches, Orner has only allowed two goals and his .913 save percentage is the best within the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Next, the Marauders embark on a three-game road trip starting with a match against Slippery Rock (4-1, 2-0 PSAC) on Saturday, Sept. 19. Millersville then travels to Pitt-Johnstown and Gannon on Sept. 23 and Sept. 26 respectively, to conclude the three-game PSAC road trip. Kickoff for the contest against The Rock is slated for 1 p.m.
