Millersville, Pa. - Millersville freshman
Aliza Mizak scored a first-half goal and a stingy defensive effort lifted the Marauders to a 1-0 victory over visiting East Stroudsburg Tuesday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Millersville, ranked No. 3 in Division II, stayed unbeaten while dropping the nation's No. 4 team to 3-2. Goal-scoring opportunities were scarce for both teams, but Mizak, a true freshman, made good on one with 10 minutes left in the first period. ESU goalkeeper Danielle Ard, who entered the game as the PSAC leader in save percentage, pulled out of the goal to bat away a loose ball that had rolled into the circle. Ard's diving attempt failed to clear the ball from the circle, and Mizak was opportunistic, gathering the ball and firing a shot into an open goal.
The Marauders managed 11 shots and put five on goal.
Lauren Gerhart nearly put the Marauders up two early in the second half. Gerhart's shot from the front of the goal rushed past Ard, but ESU's Makenna Marhefka made a defensive save with her stick outstretched.
With 22 minutes left to play, East Stroudsburg drew four consecutive penalty corners but was limited to one shot--an Emily Howell strike that was blocked by a Marauder defender well in front of the cage. Neither team took a single shot in the final 18 minutes of action.
Ally Roth, the reigning PSAC Offensive Player of the Year was held in check by a tight Marauder defense. Roth, ESU's all-time leading scorer, had scored four goals in her team's four games, but the Marauders became the first team ever to hold the two-time All-American without a shot.
