Lancaster, Pa. – Members of the Millersville track & field team and a men's basketball athlete gave back to the community throughout the spring semester by serving as mentors at the Wheatland Middle School on Thursday mornings.
Arianna Camel, Jess Fritsche, Lexi Scrivano, Madie Tropp and Jerrin Ball volunteered a total of 42 hours from late January to early May at the school districts Bullying Prevention sessions. The volunteers began the sessions with games designed in getting to know each other and progressed into having classroom conversations about bullying, discussing the idea of "being cool", fighting, cyber bullying, and online safety.
The mentors also established a pen pal activity where they would write to the students in the class and the students would write back so there was constant communication. Towards the end of the semester the mentors made a PSSA testing pump up video in which the teachers showed in homeroom and to administrative staff at Wheatland before the week long testing session.
In the final volunteer session, the mentors threw the students a party and designed them a Wheatland Class of 2015 banner which the students helped complete. The banner now hangs in the school and will be displayed at the eighth grade graduation.
