Kutztown, Pa. -Â The Millersville softball team defeated Kutztown and one of the PSAC's best pitchers in Savannah Nierintz by a score of 3-0 in game one before game two was suspended in the bottom of the third due to rain with the Golden Bears holding a 1-0 lead. A makeup date for the second game is to be determined.
The Marauders improved to 13-15 overall and 5-8 in the PSAC East while Kutztown fell to 19-8 on the season with a mark of 7-4 in conference action. At one point this season, the Golden Bears were 16-4, but since then, they have gone just 3-4.
Prior to Tuesday, Nierintz had lost just one game and fell to 13-2 with the loss to the Black & Gold. The sophomore earned two wins against Millersville back on March 22 at Millersville Softball Field, one as a starter and the other as a reliever in game two. At one point this season, her ERA was as low as 0.88 and she is now first in the league in innings pitched (98.1), first in wins (13) and third in ERA (1.21).
Cassidy Pinchorski (6-9) on the other hand was clicking on all cylinders once again and didn't give up a hit to homestanding Kutztown through the first five and two thirds innings. During that span, only two runs were scored by either team and they came from the visitors in the top of the fourth and sixth frames.
In the fourth,Â
Jordan Sheffield started things off with a double to right center and moved to third on
Maria Spinosa's sacrifice bunt. After a groundout and an intentional walk that loaded up the bases,
Kelsey Campbell came through with an RBI single to score Sheffield.
Sheffield once again got the party started in the sixth and did so with a base knock right back up the middle. She again moved to second on Spinosa's bunt and crossed the plate thanks to
Danielle DiFilippo's RBI single.
In the bottom of that inning, the Golden Bears got their first hit of the game but the runner was stranded and
Heather Lutz made it 3-0 in favor of Millersville with a solo shot over the left field fence to lead off the top of the seventh. That is Lutz's second home run in the past four games after she hadn't hit one in the first 70 games of her career.
The Golden Bears threatened with runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh but Pinchorski shut the door as she had all day. The freshman hurler finished the complete game shutout with three hits allowed, one walk and two strikeouts. Pinchorski is now first in the PSAC in complete games (13), first in strikeouts (70), second in innings pitched (94.2), tied for eighth in wins (6), and ninth in opponent's batting average (.221).
The Marauder offense finished with six total hits, two of which came from Sheffield in the leadoff spot.
Millersville is at East Stroudsburg for a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
