Marauders Win One, Drop One Against Shippensburg

Millersville, Pa. - A dominant pitching effort from Brandon Miller and a two-run home run from Dan Stoltzfus led Millersville baseball to a 4-0 win over Shippensburg in game three of the PSAC East series. Shippensburg salvaged a series split with a 4-1 win in game four by riding the arm of Rich Michaud.

Miller threw a complete game shutout and scored his eighth consecutive victory, improving to 8-1. He surrendered just five singles and walked one while striking out six. His one walk issued came with one out in the sixth, ending a streak of 23.1 consecutive innings without a walk allowed. His eighth win ties him with teammate Chris Murphy for the PSAC lead.

Stoltzfus homered in the opener and singled in game two to push his hitting streak to 21. He pulls within two of the program record set by Mike Van Gavree in 1990. Dan Neff went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader. Millersville (28-8, 15-5 PSAC East) improved to 10-4 at home against Shippensburg since it joined the PSAC East in 2009.

The Marauders started quickly against Mark Curtis. Neff singled with one out. Stoltzfus gave Millersville a 2-0 lead when he homered to center--his third homer in as many games. Mitch Stoltzfus led off the second with a single and latered raced home from third when Kurt Seiders stole second base. The lead advanced to 4-0 when David Summerfield singled in Jeremy Musser.

Miller faced some trouble in the fourth when the first two batters singled and put runners on the corners. Miller responded by striking out slugger Jake Kennedy and retiring Cody Ezolt and Dalton Hoiles to leave two stranded. The next inning, Shippensburg put runners on second and third with two outs, but again, Miller ended the threat with a strikeout.

The Marauders had recorded at least seven hits in eight consecutive games entering the nightcap, but the team boasting a .340 average was quieted in by Michaud, who entered with a 5.88 ERA. Millersville's four hits were its fewest since Feb. 8 against Winston-Salem State and matched a season-low.

Ship took a 2-0 lead off of Jim McDade in the first inning on a two-run single from Cody Ezolt. Millersville countered when Stoltzfus drove in Neff with a single of his own. The 2-1 lead stood as Michaud retired 19 of the next 21 Marauders. Millersville managed only a Neff single in the third the rest of the way.

Kennedy was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on the day when he blasted the first pitch of the sixth over the left field wall for his 15th homer of the season. Ship added another run in the seventh on a passed ball.

McDade took the loss after allowing three earned runs (four total) on 10 hits over 6.2 innings. McDade struck out five and did not walk a batter, extending his streak of innings without a walk to 30.1 innings.

Millersville hosts a non-conference doubleheader with East Region power Wilmington on Wednesday.
