Murphy's Dominance Continues; Marauders Split with Kutztown

Millersville, Pa. - Chris Murphy kept his record perfect and improved to a PSAC-best 9-0 with a complete game effort in the opening game of Friday's home doubleheader with Kutztown. After the 7-1 win in the opener, the Marauders failed to complete the sweep, falling 5-1 in the nightcap.

Murphy gave up one run, scattering eight hits and striking out four while not walking a batter. He need just 86 pitches to work through his fourth complete game of the season. Murphy has now won 12 consecutive decisions dating back to last season, which moves him to third in PSAC history in consecutive pitching wins. Murphy has thrown at least five innings in all 10 starts this season. He's also allowed one or no runs in eight of 10 starts. His career record improved to 30-4, moving him into a tie with Slippery Rock's Jeff Brennan (2002-05) for third in PSAC history.

Millersville received some help from Kutztown early. Chas McCormick hit a two-out double in the first, which was followed by an infield error. Jeremy Musser put down a bunt that stayed just fair inside the third base line, and McCormick scored easily. Millersville added another unearned run in the second after David Summerfield reached on an error to start the frame. The Marauders made the Golden Bears pay. Tyler Orris and Dan Neff delivered back-to-back RBI singles for a 3-0 lead.

McCormick added a RBI double in the fourth. John Brogan, starting his first game since March 23, went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the fifth and a single and run in the sixth. Tyler McDonald and Mitch Stoltzfus both drove in runs in the sixth.

Murphy worked a no-hitter through 3.2 innings and retired 13 of the first 15 batters he faced. He ran into some trouble in the sixth, but he escaped a two-on, one-out scenario with a ground out and strike out.

Kutztown turned the tables in game two, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead off of starter Dylan Boisclair (3-3). The Golden Bears scored at least one run in each of the first three innings, and Matt Armour hit a two-run homer in the third.

Orris led off Millersville's half of the first with a single and moved to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. McCormick brought him home with a sacrifice fly to deep center. Millersville put at least one runner on in each of the next five innings and had two runners on in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth but failed to score. Kutztown starter Pat Flynn gave up five hits through 4.2 innings. Matt Matricardi did not allow a hit over the final 2.1 innings. Millersville received 2.2 strong innings of relief from Reid Anderson. He gave up only one hit and on unearned run.

Dan Stoltzfus entered the day within two games of Mike Van Gavree's hitting streak record, but his streak stopped at 21 after going 0-for-6 with a walk and reaching base on two Kutztown errors. His hitting streak stands as the sixth-longest in PSAC history.

Millersville completes the series with Kutztown on Saturday. The Marauders then return home on Sunday to host Philadelphia for two games starting at 1 p.m.
