Marauders Split with Raiders; Win Streak Stops at 13

Shippensburg, Pa. - No. 22 Millersville pushed its winning streak to within one of the program record after a 4-3 win in game one of Saturday's PSAC East doubleheader at Shippensburg. But the Raiders stopped it by winning game two, 10-8.

Both games came down to the final inning with Chris Murphy and the Marauders escaping a bases loaded, no out situation in the bottom of the seventh of game one. In the nightcap, the Marauders trailed by two but two walks put the go-ahead run at the plate. Shippensburg's Josh Kutchey saved the day for the Raiders by getting Kurt Seiders to line out to left. Millersville's (27-7, 14-4 PSAC East) winning streak ended at 13, one short of the program mark set by the 2000 and 1982 clubs.

Marauders' first baseman Dan Stoltzfus, the reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, continued to swing a hot bat. He went 5-for-7 with two homers, a double and five RBIs in the doubleheader. Stotlzfus' solo homer in the seventh inning of the opener was the difference-maker in a one-run win. He hit a three-run shot in game two, momentarily giving Millersville the lead. He extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Murphy's tossed his 16th career complete game in the opener, establishing a school record that had stood since Jay Dimler posted the mark at 15 in 1988. He improved to 8-0 in nine starts and won his 11th consecutive decision dating back to April 13, 2014.

Millersville helped Murphy by jumping out to a 2-0 lead, using a RBI single in the first and a RBI double in the third from Shippensburg native Jeremy Musser. The Raiders wiped otu the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Jake Kennedy and a single from Cody Ezolt. The Raiders jumped in front in the fifth. The leadoff hitter reach second after a single and passed ball, and Nick Spangler drove in the go-ahead run.

Millersville evened the count in the sixth when David Summerfield doubled in Mitch Stoltzfus who had started the inning with a single. Then, in the seventh, Dan Stoltzfus battled back from an 0-2 count. On the payoff pitch, Stoltzfus hit his sixth homer of the season to give Millersville a 4-3 lead.

It took some magic from Murphy to hold on to the win, though. Ship started the inning with a hit batsmen and a double from Spangler. The Marauders walked the bases loaded. With no outs, Murphy was able to induce a ground ball and Millersville cut down the lead runner at the plate. Murphy then struck out the No. 1 and No. 2 hitters to end the game.

Murphy allowed six hits and walked two while striking out eight over seven innings. Ship's Marcus Shippey also went the distance but took the loss after four runs on 10 hits. Tyler Orris, Dan Neff, Stoltzfus and Musser all recorded two hits each. Chas McCormick was held hitless, ending his hitting streak at 17 games and snapping his streak of consecutive games reached base at 30.

Shippensburg jumped on Millersville starter Dylan Boisclair early in game two. Kennedy hit a two-run homer to cap a three-run first. Summerfield's first career triple brought in a run in the second, and Stoltzfus' three-run shot in the third gave Millersville a 4-3 advantage. But in the fourth, Kennedy hit his second homer in as many at bats and Tyler Betz hit a three-run blast. The lead was pushed to 10-4 in the fifth when Spangler drove in two with a single.

Millersville rallied in the sixth, scoring four runs on four hits and two walks. McCormick brought in two with a single and Stoltzfus another with a double. But hat was all the Marauders could muster. Alex Ramsay and Tyler McDonald drew walks in the seventh to put the go-ahead run at the plate. Seiders hit a liner off of Kutchey, but the catch was made, giving Kutchey his third save.

Millersville held a 12-8 advantage in hits but committed two errors, one of which led to an unearned run. Boisclair fell to 3-2 with the loss.

Millersville and Shippensburg close the series on Sunday at Cooper Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
