Kinston, N.C. -Â The Millersville baseball team turned to right-hander
Brandon Miller in game three against IUP and he delivered, but the Crimson Hawks hit a pair of home runs in the series finale to salvage one win in the teams' four-game set.
The Marauders (10-3) pushed their win streak to nine games before IUP won game four between the two teams to improve to 3-5 overall. Millersville has had a winning streak of at least eight games in each of the last three seasons.
Game OneFive runs of support was plenty for the start that
Brandon Miller (3-1) turned in. The sophomore hurler earned his first career complete game shutout with seven innings pitched and gave up just four hits with only one walk and seven strikeouts, also a career high.
Â
Both teams were held scoreless through the first three and a half innings before Millersville exploded for three runs and two runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth frames, respectively.
Â
In the fourth with one out on the scoreboard,
Mitch Stoltzfus singled through the left side and reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week
David Summerfield followed that up with a walk.
Tyler McDonald then cranked a homer over the left field fence to give him three round trippers on the season and seven for his career.
Â
The scoring didn't stop there though and in the next inning,
Luke Emling doubled down the left field line to get the party started.
John Brogan then struck out but reached first on a wild pitch that allowed Emling to move one base closer to home. M. Stoltzfus then put down a sacrifice bunt and Brogan moved to second but Emling was thrown out at home by the first baseman. After a balk moved M. Stoltzfus to second and Brogan to third, Summerfield pushed his hitting streak to 11 games with a single to center that gave the Marauders a 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the seventh after Miller had retired the first two batters of the inning, a double sandwiched by two hit batters loaded up the bases. The sophomore then did what he had done all day and took control with a strikeout to seal the victory for Millersville.Â
M. Stoltzfus and Neff were the lone Marauders with multiple hits at two apiece.
Chas McCormick went 0-for-3 at the plate and his hit streak was snapped at nine games.
Game TwoIn a back and forth game two, the Marauders scored first in the bottom of the first when Brogan brought home
Jeremy Musser on an RBI single through the left side. In the top of the third though, IUP took its first lead of the series with a two-run home run to left center off the bat of Ryan Uhl.
The Marauders continued to fight for that four-game sweep though as
Tyler Orris tied the game back up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double over the head of the left fielder that scored the speedy
Dan Neff all the way around from first.Â
The Crimson Hawks again took a 3-2 lead in the seventh with an RBI single and again, Millersville swung back, this time in the next half inning. McCormick started things up with a double to right center and Musser did his part with a two-bagger to the same place and McCormick touched home plate. After Musser moved to third on an
A.J. Hammond flyout, Brogan came through with a base knock up the middle and the Marauders were back in control, 4-3.
Jim McDade came back out for the top of the eighth and walked the first batter of the inning, Scott Hess. Wes Carson then made McDade pay and hit a homer to left that put the Crimson Hawks back up 5-4. That shot ended McDade's day and
Sean Stephenson came on in relief to throw two scoreless with two walks and one hit allowed.
Millersville went three up, three down in both the eighth and ninth innings and IUP held on for the 5-4 win.Â
Summerfield singled in the bottom of the seventh to push his hitting streak to 12 games while Brogan and Orris both tallied a pair of hits. On the mound, McDade fell to 1-2 with the loss and gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with a walk.Â
