Kinston, N.C. - Millersville baseball pushed its winning streak to eight on Sunday, taking a doubleheader from PSAC West rival Indiana (Pa.) by scores of 5-1 and 8-3.
Chris Murphy notched the complete game victory in the opener to tie the school record for pitching wins, and
Dylan Boisclair earned the win in his first career start.
David Summerfield,
Mitch Stoltzfus and
Chas McCormick all totaled three hits in the doubleheader, and Summerfield and McCormick hit home runs. Summerfield's hitting streak extended to 10 games while McCormick's pushed to nine. Stoltzfus recorded two doubles and scored four runs. Outscoring its opponents 76-20 during the recent eight-game winning streak, Millersville has scored at least five runs in each game while holding opponents to three runs or fewer six times.
It was Millersville's (9-2) starting pitching that stole the show on Sunday. Murphy improved to 4-0 after allowing one run on six hits and no walks in the opener. Murphy (4-0) improved to 25-4 in his three-year Marauder career, tying
Tad Barton's record for wins that was set just last season. Boisclair (2-0) made his first start after three early season relief appearances. Boisclair carried a perfect game into the fifth and worked into the seventh before exiting. He gave up just two runs on two hits and struck out a career-high nine while not issuing a walk. Boisclair's first run allowed of the season didn't come until the seventh, giving him 14 consecutive scoreless innings to start the season and 17 consecutive dating back to last season. Neither of Millersville's starters issued a walk.
In the opener, Murphy gave up a leadoff double to Austin Mock but proceeded to retire the next 13 batters he faced. By the time IUP scored with three singles in the sixth, Millersville owned a 3-0 lead.
Tyler Orris started the third with a single and swiped second base.
Jeremy Musser lined a double that landed just inside the right field line. Orris scored easily from second. In the following inning, the Marauders received a pair of RBI ground outs from
Dan Neff and Orris to take a 3-0 advantage. After IUP's one run in the sixth, Summerfield responded. After Stoltzfus' leadoff double, Summerfield ripped a rising liner off the scoreboard in right-center for his second bomb of the season and second hit of the game.
Murphy surrendered a single to start the seventh but quickly rolled a 4-6-3 double play and got Mike Lupia to ground out to third to end the threat. The complete game moved him within one of tying Jay Dimler's (1985-88) career record.
IUP starter Kyle Zaorski (1-1) entered the game with a 3-0 career record against Millersville and had allowed just 10 hits and four runs while striking out 27 in 18 innings. Millersville recorded all five of its runs and all eight of its hits in the game off of Zaorski.
Boisclair started game two by sitting down the first 13 batters he faced and he struck out at least one batter in each of his six innings. Millersville broke open the game in the second with a six-run inning that was aided by a trio of IUP errors.
A.J. Hammond, Stoltzfus and
Tyler McDonald all singled. Neff and Orris drew bases-loaded walks. Summerfield and McCormick contributed sacrifice flies. Millersville tacked on another unearned run in the fifth--Stoltzfus' fourth of the day. And then in the sixth, McCormick led off with an opposite field blast. The homer was Millersville's 15th in 11 games. This coming after a season in which it hit 10 in 55 games.
Millersville and IUP play a doubleheader with a seven inning game in game one and a nine inning game in game two on Monday starting at 11 a.m.
