Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team suffered a gut wrenching 20-19 loss to Holy Family in their season opener on a cold and foggy Wednesday night at Chryst Field.
Action swayed back and forth throughout with the teams needing an overtime period to decide the winner. The eventual game winner was netted by Holy Family midfielder Paige Settar who scored with 53 seconds remaining in the extra period. Minutes before Settar's goal, it was the Marauders who thought they had the game in hand with a fast break goal scored by
Bridget Hufnagel. The officials checked Hufnagel's stick after the celebration and the goal was waved off much to the dismay of the home crowd.
Millersville (0-1) had six different players score in the home opener with freshman
Sabrina Fusco scoring seven goals to lead the team. Hufnagel added five goals and two assists in her debut match for the Marauders. Midfielder
Hannah Vogel added a hat track and now has 112 career goals. Goalkeeper
Shannon Davis made her first collegiate start between the pipes and totaled six saves 66-minutes of action.
Holy Family (1-1) couldn't contain the Black & Gold offense through most of the first half as the Tigers surrendered 12 first period goals. The Tigers clawed their way back in the game outscoring Millersville 8-6 in the second half with Settar netting the effort that forced the overtime period with four minutes left in regulation.
The Marauders were out-shot by Holy Family 41-36, but Millersville was able to place more of its shots on target (27-26). Millersville picked up seven more draw controls than the Tigers (25-18), but Monica Quinn's squad picked up more ground balls than the Marauders (30-20).
Millersville's 20 goals were the most in a season opener under Coach
Mia Hall and the team's best effort since 2010.
Next, the Marauders will look to gain its first victory of the season Saturday, March 7 against Shepherd. The match marks the second of Millersville's five game home stand to begin the 2015 season. The game is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
