Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team returned to Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium after a three-game road trip and were unable to pick up a victory against a nationally-ranked West Chester squad, 15-6.
Â
Goalkeeper
Shannon Davis recorded her fourth straight double-digit save total as she tallied 13 saves in the loss. Millersville (3-6, 1-4 PSAC) could only muster a season-low 14 shots against the stingy Golden Ram defense. Offensively the Marauders were led by
Sabrina Fusco who scored a pair of goals and pushes her team lead in goal total to 25.
Renee Landis,
Bridget Hufnagel,
Madison Long, and
Taylor Davis also scored in the loss.
Â
West Chester (5-3, 3-2 PSAC) picked up its first PSAC road win of the year thanks to five goals from junior Erin Eckert. Hannah Cowan (3), Ashley Pyle (2), and Kristen Vath (2) also notched two or more goals for the Golden Rams. Goalkeeper Marrilee Viguers had two saves in the victory.
Â
The Marauders defensive unit was impressive for the first 28 minutes of the match, holding the No. 18 Golden Rams to just six goals during the stretch. But defensive communication broke down within the final two minutes of the half as West Chester scored two un-answered including a Sarah Dennison goal with just 16 seconds remaining in the first period.
Â
Both teams were highly competitive in draw controls with West Chester holding a slight 12-11 advantage. The Black & Gold, however, forced the Golden Rams into 22 turnovers which marked a season high for Ginny Martino's squad.
Â
Millersville will play on the road in its next match as it travels to Wilmington, Del. for a non-conference game with the Wilmington Wildcats. The match is set for Saturday, April 4 with first draw control scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
Prior to the first draw control both teams met in mid field to embrace for the "Lax 4 Life" festivities. "Lax-4-Life" is a national lacrosse campaign that provides support and raises awareness towards adolescent and young adult suicide prevention. The organization was founded in 2008 after Allyson Green, sister of former West Chester goalkeeper Mary Beth Green, committed suicide. Every year in the last week of March or first week of April lacrosse teams in the region host "Lax-4-Life" games to support the organization. The team gathered for a group photo prior to today's contest, which can be seen below.
