Marauders Light Up Chestnut Hill for Two Wins

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville lineup continued to crank out hits and runs and rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Chestnut Hill by scores of 7-2 and 10-8. The Marauders pounded out 23 hits including nine of the extra base variety to improve to 18-6.

Millersville won for the fifth time in the last six games and recorded double-digit hits for the sixth consecutive game, out-hitting its opponents 75-36 during the stretch. In Tuesday's doubleheader, David Summerfield, Chas McCormick and Jeremy Musser each recorded five hits. Musser totaled 11 bases with a home run, triple and double. Dan Neff reached base five times and drove in a team-leading six runs.

Chestnut Hill's (8-5) pitching staff entered the game with a 2.88 ERA but it was rocked by the red-hot Marauder lineup. Millersville totaled 13 hits in game one and 10 more in game two, and that was without at least one more at bat. The game was called because of darkness after Chestnut Hill's top of the sixth.

In the opener, Millersville did nearly all of its damage in the third inning. The first seven batters of the inning reached base on a walk and six hits and the first six scored. McCormick tripled home Tyler Orris and Dan Neff. Dan Stoltzfus knocked home one with a single. Musser doubled and scored on a Summerfield single, and Tyler McDonald plated Summerfield with a single of his own. Millersville tacked on another in the sixth when Summerfield followed Musser's leadoff triple with a RBI single.

Cody Stoneback (1-0) was strong in his starting effort. He pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and just one walk while striking out two. Logan Grant pitched two innings of relief, allowing in one run, and McCormick went from right field to the mound in the seventh for his pitching debut. He walked three and gave up one run but recorded an assist on all three outs.

Summerfield finished with four hits and two RBIs. McCormick went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Musser went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Game two was more adventurous for both teams. Millersville ran through five pitchers in six innings with each of the first five allowing at least one run. The defense entered the day ranked fourth in Division II in fielding percentage (.978) but committed four errors, including two in one series of plays that cleared the bases for Chestnut Hill and wiped out a 5-2 lead. Chestut Hill scored two in the first and needed just one hit to do it. The Marauder lineup picked up the defense, though, sending nine batters to the plate in the first and pushing home three runs on three walks and three singles. The Marauders added to the lead with Neff scored after a leadoff triple in the second, and Musser homered for a 5-2 lead in the third.

The Chestnut Hill half of the fourth started innocently enough with two strikeouts from Grant. But two seeing-eye singles were followed by a consecutive throwing errors that sent three runners home. Millersville's lead disappeared in one play. The offense again came to the rescue, answering with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Griffins threatened in the fifth. They loaded the bases while recording just one hit and a run came home on a bases loaded walk, bringing the score to 7-6. Stephen Muscovitch managed to escape, though, recording a strikeout with a full count and the bases loaded.

Millersville extended the lead to 10-6 with three runs in the fifth. Orris singled home a run, Neff doubled in one, and Stoltzfus plated Orris with a sacrifice fly. The extra runs were key as Chestnut Hill drew back-to-back walks to start the sixth and both eventually came home on RBI groundouts. Marauder reliever Jesse Mowen recorded all three outs in the inning to secure the win with his first save.

The first six hitters in Millersville's lineup tallied at least one hit. Neff doubled and tripled. Orris scored three runs and reached base three times with two hits and a walk. Mccormick went 3-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Musser added two more hits and Summerfield drove in two more to bring his doubleheader total to four. Reid Anderson (1-0) earned the mound win for Millersville.

McCormick, 13-for-24 with 10 RBIs in his last six games, has reached base in 22 consecutive games. In that same stretch, Summerfield is 12-for-19 (.632) with eight RBIs. Musser sat out of the Marauder starting lineup for five games but including a pinch hit single in game three of the East Stroudsburg series, he has gone eight for his last 14 with two home runs and four extra base hits.

The Marauders return to PSAC East play on Friday against Lock Haven at Cooper Park.
