Marauders Fight Way to Sweep of East Stroudsburg

Ephrata, Pa. - Resilience was key in Millersville baseball's doubleheader sweep of PSAC East rival East Stroudsburg on Monday. Sophomore Brandon Miller exhibited the quality when he retired the final 14 batters of the 4-3 game one win after allowing a three-run homer in the third. Tyler McDonald and the Marauder offense put it on display when after surrendering a five-run lead in the bottom of the sixth of game two, they answered with five runs in the top of the seventh. Game two starter Jim McDade bounced back from that five-run sixth by securing the 10-5 win with a shutout seventh.

Millersville (16-6, 5-3 PSAC East) out-hit East Stroudsburg 32-9 in the twinbill, and the 20 hits in game two were the most against a PSAC East opponent since April 19, 2008. Millersville's hitters batted .457 on the day while East Stroudsburg's hitters mustered a .170 average against Miller and McDade, both of who threw complete games. Despite the staggeringly lopsided offensive numbers, both games remained in the balance until the final inning.

McDonald and Mitch Stoltzfus both went 5-for-8 on the day. McDonald drove in three runs. Chas McCormick totaled five hits including a triple in game two. Dan Neff scored four runs, stole three bases and reached base five times with four hits (one triple) and a walk. Dan Stoltzfus also had four hits and three RBIs.

Millersville opened both games with sizable leads. The first inning of game one featured six singles and three runs, but the bases were left loaded. Mitch Stoltzfus led off the third with a ground rule double and he later scored on McDonald's single to left. That would be the extent of Millersville's scoring but it was enough. All of ESU's offense came in the third on one swing of the bat. Ian Allen followed a walk and single with a three-run homer, which cut Millersville's lead to 4-3.

But Miller, who was pitching on his high school mound, was truly dominant after the Allen homer. He sat down the next two batters of the third and then breezed through 14 consecutive East Stroudsburg batters to record his third consecutive complete game and improve to 5-1. Miller allowed only four hits and struck out four while walking one.

Eight of the nine hitters in Millersville's lineup had at least one hit, and McDonald, Neff and Stoltzfus each had two.

McDade picked up in game two just how Miller finished in game one. McDade faced one over the minimum and needed just 44 pitches--33 of which were strikes--to work the first five innings. Meanwhile, the Marauder bats built a 5-0 lead on 11 hits. Millersville put at least two runners on base in every inning and even left the bases loaded in the second and third innings.

But in the bottom of the sixth, East Stroudsburg was helped by a Marauder error to start to the inning and some harsh sun that caused trouble on a routine fly to left. With three runs already on the board, Dylan Tamecki tagged a McDade pitch over the right center field wall, which scored two runs and tied the game at 5-5.

Millersville responded immediately. Working against reliever Cody Klinger, McDonald put together an epic at bat, facing 13 pitches and fighting off six consecutive full count offerings before roping a line drive off the base of the wall in left field for a double. A pick off play gone awry pushed McDonald to third. Fellow senior Kurt Seiders followed by slapping the first pitch from reliever John Armbrust up the middle for the go-ahead run. Millersville piled on four more runs in the inning including a three-run blast from Jeremy Musser.

Even after giving up five runs in the sixth, McDade returned to the mound in the seventh and got three fly outs to secure his second win of the season.

McCormick recorded the second four-hit game of his season with three singles and a triple. McDonald and the Stoltzfus cousins each contributed three hits. Millersville forced East Stroudsburg to use five pitchers. Tyler Eckman, who had not allowed a run in his first nine appearances and 10 innings, was tagged for six hits and three runs in two innings.

Millersville heads to Chestnut Hill for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
