West Chester, Pa. - Millersville built an early lead in both games of Wednesday's PSAC East doubleheader at West Chester. The 29th-ranked Marauders held on for a 3-2 win in the opener on the strength of a complete game from
Brandon Miller. But West Chester rallied in game two and beat the Marauders 6-2 in extra innings to salvage a series split.
Miller (4-1) won his fourth consecutive decision by throwing seven innings, striking out 11 and allowing two runs on four hits. Miller has pitched back-to-back complete games after going the first 11 starts of his career without one. Miller out-dueled Andrew Gernert (0-1), who scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs, three total while striking out six.
Three of the four hits Miller allowed were to Dylan Tice. Eight Marauders recorded at least one hit.
Tyler Orris went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Dan Stoltzfus drove in two. Both of his RBIs came in the first when he drove in Orris and
Dan Neff with a single. Orris scored on an error in the third to give Millersville a 3-0 lead. Tice hit a solo homer in the fourth for West Chester's first run. West Chester threatened in the seventh after Miller walked the first two batters of the inning. He gave up a RBI single, which brought West Chester within one. But with the tying run on third base, Miller rolled a pair of ground ball outs to escape with the win.
Millersville wasn't as fortunate in the late innings of game two. The Marauders built a 2-0 lead when Stoltzfus drove in Orris with a single and Neff scored on a double play ball. Marauder starter
Jim McDade was rolling along. He threw four shutout innings and had two outs in the fifth when he suffered a finger injury that forced him to leave the game. Millersville's bullpen, which gave up a late lead in game two of the series, could not hold the lead again. A throwing error allowed one run to score and a bases loaded walk allowed the tying run to cross. West Chester scored two runs on just one hit and left the bases loaded.
Millersville put the go-ahead run on third after a
Kurt Seiders double in the seventh, but two straight ground outs ended the inning and kept the score tied. Stoltzfus doubled in the seventh but could not score. Neff singled in the eighth and represented the game-winning run. Stoltzfus doubled to left but West Chester executed a relay and pegged Neff at the plate, sending the game to the ninth.
West Chester led off the inning with two singles and a fielding error opened the door to a four-run inning. A 6-2 lead for West Chester was more than enough.
West Chester starter Matt Petrizzi (1-1) pitched all nine innings for the win. He also drove in three runs at the plate. The Millersville bullpen allowed in two runs in the fifth, and
Matt Binder took the loss after giving up four runs--two earned--on three hits and two walks. Millersville relievers issued six walks in 3.1 innings of work.
