Cheyney, Pa. - Eddie Callender's game-tying putback in the final seconds of regulation capped an epic comeback and propelled the Millersville men's basketball into an overtime period in which it pulled away from a deflated Cheyney squad for an 85-78 win.
Millersville (13-12, 9-10 PSAC) trailed by four points with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. But it was shades of the 2012 game in Cope Hall when Millersville erased a five-point deficit in the final minute to win on a Larry Grant buzzer beater. It was also a little deja vu from one month ago when Millersville needed a last-second lay-up to send the game to overtime where it eventually won, 70-68. This time, it was a 3-pointer and four clutch free throws from
Shawn Williams, some key misses from the Wolves and Callender's hoop with two seconds to play. Millersville won its fourth consecutive game against the Wolves but it was the sixth consecutive game between the teams that was decided by fewer than 10 points.
The Marauders trailed by nine with 3:30 to play, but just under the two minute mark, Williams hit a triple to bring Millersville to within 66-63. The Marauders were still behind three on the next offensive possession but a miss ended up in the hands of Cheyney, and at the other end of the floor, Rasahn Brinkley was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 33 seconds to play. But instead of putting his team up six, Brinkley missed two of the three attempts. Williams drew a foul four seconds later and drilled both foul shots to cut Cheyney's lead to 67-65.
Cheyney's Eugene Lett was fouled seconds later and managed to hit both, but Cheyney fouled Williams only two seconds after the ensuing inbounds pass. Williams again sank both freebies. With 10 seconds to play, Millersville foul Lett again. This time, Lett missed both foul shots, giving Millersville the final possession. Williams found Callender on the block but his first shot missed. Callender was able to gather his own miss and connect on the second effort just before the buzzer.
Millersville, now 5-0 in overtime games, rattled off seven unanswered points during a one-minute stretch in overtime. A 3-pointer from
Tavon Parker with 1:37 to go and a pair of free throws from
Sam Light at the 1:11 mark put the Marauders up 81-74. That advantage was more than enough.
Callender led the Marauders with 18 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Anthony Moe posted 15 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double and helped improve his team to 7-3 since joining the team.
Williams scored all 15 of his points in the second half. Light added 13 points, hitting all five of his free throws.
The difference in the game came at the line. The Marauders sank 23-of-32 (.719) while Cheyney connected on 13-of-21 (.619). It was especially evident down the stretch as Millersville hit 14-of-19 in the final 10 minutes of play.
Coupled with Shippensburg's loss at Mansfield, Millersville's win put it a half-game up on the Raiders for the No. 4 seed in the PSAC Tournament.
Millersville can clinch a postseason berth at Lock Haven on Saturday. Tip is 3 p.m.
