Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Millersville Snaps Seven-Game Skid with Red-Hot Offense and Crucial Bench Play

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team shot 54.4 percent (31-of-57) from the floor and outscored Mansfield's bench 30-11 en route to an 83-72 victory over the Mountaineers Wednesday night inside Decker Gymnasium. That marked the Black and Gold's highest field goal percentage in a game since Feb. 28, 2006 against the Mountaineers inside Pucillo when they shot 57.1 percent (28-of-49) from the floor.

Millersville (11-11, 8-9 PSAC) snapped its seven-game losing streak and kept its hold onto a tie with Kutztown for the fifth-place spot in the Eastern Divison while Mansfield fell to 2-19 overall and 1-16 in the PSAC. With Lock Haven's loss to West Chester earlier in the night, the Marauders now lead the Bald Eagles by one and a half games in the standings. The Black and Gold have now won 17 straight over Mansfield and lead the all-time series 63-3.

The two teams tied five times in the first 13 minutes and 14 seconds with the final coming at 24-24 and neither team was able to lead by more than five points during that span. After the home team's Becky Evans made her second free throw in a row to put the Mountaineers up one, 25-24, Millersville used an 18-9 run throughout the rest of the half to go up eight, 42-34 at the break. The Marauders two leading scorers for the game, Yasmin Cooper and Alayah Hall, fueled the run with four points apiece. Millersville shot over 64 percent from the field in the first half but their lead was held to single digits because of 13 turnovers.

Out of the intermission, the visitors pushed their lead to 14, 50-36, the biggest it had been the entire game. From that point until the 8:11 mark of the second half, the lead was never smaller than seven until it was cut to five, 61-56. Mansfield continued to press the issue though and eventually cut the margin to four, 68-64, the smallest it had been since there was under a minute remaining in the first stanza. However, the Marauders scored eight straight points to get the lead back to 12, 76-64, on the way to capturing the 11-point victory.

Cooper and Hall each registered a team-high 16 points which tied a season high for Cooper and became Hall's new career high. Shelby Reimer and Tyisha White each added 10 points while Alexis Martin paced the rebounding category with 11 boards to go with her six points. Reimer also tied a personal best in assists with five.

After turning over the ball 13 times in the first half, Millersville did so only three times in the next 20 minutes and scored a season-high 83 points, its most since Jan. 11 of last season against Mansfield. The Marauders dominated scoring in the paint to the tune of 52-20 and fast break points 12-4. All 10 players that head coach Mary Fleig put on the floor found the scoring column.

Next up, Millersville will host Kutztown on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of "Play 4 Kay" day inside Pucillo Gymnasium.
