TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
• Millersville is one of 15 wrestling programs in NCAA Super Region 1 heading to West Liberty University to compete for berths to the NCAA Division II Championships in St. Louis, Mo. The Marauders are in their second season as a Division II program. The top four place-winners in each weight class earn a trip to the NCAA Championships.
• Millersville came up empty in its championship qualifying efforts in 2013-14. Aram Moffitt was the closet, coming within one win of the national championships. The Marauders are sending seven true freshmen to the super regional. The only Marauder in the lineup that competed in last year's Super Region 1 Championships is Thomas Nulty. Nulty went 1-2 at 133 pounds. He will wrestle at 141 this season. Nulty has a career-high 15 wins but is 2-7 against Super Region 1 competition.
• The competition for spots will be heated as Notre Dame College (No. 3), Mercyhurst (No. 5), Kutztown (No. 15), Pitt-Johnstown (No. 16) are all nationally-ranked teams. Individually, 14 wrestlers from Super Region 1 are ranked nationally.
• Since moving into the starting lineup at 125 pounds, Alex Baider has won four consecutive matches including three over wrestlers he is likely to face at the championships. He has recently defeated LIU Post's Tyler Walsh, East Stroudsburg's Anthony Marino and Kutztown's Nick Demarco. He lost a narrow 5-3 decision to Evan Link of Pitt-Johnstown in January. Link enters the tournament ranked No. 4 in the super region by the coaches. He will have to contend with Gannon's Matt Turek (No. 2) and Mercyhurst's Willie Bohince (No. 4), who are both nationally ranked.
• At 157 pounds, Shane Ruhnke has produced an impressive 21-10 record with a team-leading 10 falls. Ruhnke, however, has lost seven of his last 10 bouts including three in a row to Super Region 1 competition. Ruhnke faced the likely-No. 1 seed Jonatan Rivera of Notre Dame College on Jan. 3 at the F&M Open. Rivera scored a fall at the 2:51 mark. Ruhnke has faced all six of the wrestlers in the coaches' super region rankings and is 1-5 in those matches, scoring a fall over No. 4 Garrett Smith of Gannon.
• Freshman Ian Shannon may be the favorite to earn a national bid as the coaches have him ranked No. 4 in the latest super region rankings. He boasts a team-leading 23 wins and is 10-2 against super region competition this season. He has faced two of the wrestlers currently in the super region rankings, beating Wheeling Jesuits Reyse Wallbrown, 2-0, and losing to No. 2 Angelo Bortoluzzi of Mercyhurst at the PSAC Championships by a 9-0 major decision.
• Heavyweight David Wuestner owns a strong 16-12 record as a true freshman but has one of the toughest roads to a national bid. Wuestner has gone head-to-head with all six of the wrestlers in the coaches' super region rankings and came up empty in the win column. It is a strong bracket led by the reigning national champion, Kutztown's Ziad Haddad. Haddad recently scored a 17-5 major decison over Wuestner. Wuestner has provided stiff competition, though. Wuestner was edged by a 6-3 score against Blake Lucas of Ohio Valley. Tyson Searer of East Stroudsburg won by a 6-4 score, and Aaron Silverio of West Liberty won by a 3-1 score.
• The final session, starting on Saturday at 3 p.m., features the championship finals and third and fifth-place matches on three mats. True fourth-place matches will be wrestled on one mat.
