Williamston, N.C . - Starter
Jim McDade tossed threw eight innings of shutout baseball and the bats of
Tyler Orris and
Chas McCormick stayed hot as Millersville completed the series sweep of Le Moyne and extended its winning streak to six with a 5-0 shutout on Sunday in Williamston.
McDade (1-1) held Le Moyne (2-4) to just three hits and three walks while striking out three. It was the third time in his last nine starts that he has worked at least eight innings.
Sean Stephenson worked the ninth inning complete Millersville's first shutout of the season and the first since blanking Shippensburg on April 12, 2014. Exactly one year ago to the day, Millersville shutout Le Moyne in Williamston.
The Marauders hit two more home runs Sunday, pushing its season total to 13--three more than it hit in the entire 2014 season. Millersville has outscored its opponents 63-16 over the last six games, posting a batting average of .370 to the opponents' .232. Millersville has now started 7-2 for the third consecutive season and for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
McCormick went 4-for-5 with two doubles for his second career two-hit game. The effort extended his hitting streak to seven games during which he is 15-for-27 (.556) with 12 RBIs, five doubles, a homer and four walks for a .613 on base percentage and .852 slugging percentage. McCormick is one of only four players in the
Jon Shehan Era (since 2008) to string together five consecutive multi-hit games. The club includes select company:
Zach Stone (2013, 2012), Chris Edgar (2010) and Derek Kline (2009). Orris has been just as impressive and his 2-for-4 performance on Sunday marked the sixth multi-hit game of his season. After going the first 118 at bats of his career without a home run, Orris hit his second in four games on Sunday. He also drove in three runs, giving him 12 RBIs during Millersville's six-game winning streak and one in each game. Orris has reached base in all eight games and has a hit in seven of eight.
Millersville broke open Sunday's game in the second inning. It started with
A.J. Hammond's single to right.
David Summerfield brought him home with a RBI ground out.
Tyler McDonald was hit by a pitch and
Dan Neff singled, and with two on and two outs, Orris blasted a three-run bomb to center to cap a four-run frame.
Le Moyne's Zach Place (1-1) kept Millersville in check for the next four innings before exiting with six strikeouts and nine hits allowed. Ryan O'Kane gave Le Moyne a pair of shutout innings but McDonald tagged him for a solo homer in the ninth to extend Millersville's lead to five.
The Marauder bullpen has now allowed only one run in its last eight innings of work. Millersville out-hit Le Moyne 13-4. In addition to McCormick or Orris, Hammond and Neff also recorded two hits.
Millersville is set to start at seven-game home stand on March 3 against Chestnut Hill.
