Millersville Pushes No. 12 California to the Wire; Falls Short, 57-52

Millersville, Pa. -  Millersville women's basketball outplayed the 12th-ranked California (Pa.) Vulcans for three quarters but a nightmarish second quarter was too much for the Marauders to shake. Millersville was outscored 20-4 in the 10-minute stretch and despite a valiant effort to the wire, the Marauders fell 57-52, ending a three-game winning streak.

Millersville (4-4, 2-4 PSAC) raced to a 12-0 lead, hitting its first six shots from the field including eight from Aunjel Van Brakle a 3-pointer from Tyisha White that forced Cal coach Jess Strom to call a timeout. California's (6-1, 5-0 PSAC) first points did not come until 5:51 of basketball had been played.

But over the next 10:20, the Marauders managed just one 3-pointer from Van Brakle and scored a total of four points in the second quarter. All four were scored by Celeste Robinson. Millersville shot 1-for-11 with seven turnovers in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, California scored 20 points in the second period. Still, the Vulcans' first lead didn't come until 3:51 left in the second quarter. The Vulcans' 27-19 halftime lead extended to as many as 15 after two free throws from Miki Glenn early in the fourth quarter. Millersville rallied, though, hitting seven of its next nine shots. Robinson scored nine points in an eight-minute stretch including six in a row from 5:06 to the 2:14 mark. With 48 seconds to play, Van Brakle pulled down a rebound and raced coast-to-coast for a layup, pulling Millersville to within 55-52.

California's attempt to run down the shot clock was foiled by a sticky Marauder half court defense. Alex Stam picked off a pass with 16 seconds to play, giving Millersville the ball with a chance to tie. With two fouls to give before putting Millersville in the bonus, the Vulcans elected to foul quickly on Millersville's first inbounds play. The second try for Millersville resulted in the ball of the hands of Robinson, who attacked down the center of the lane. Her floater with eight seconds to play rimmed out and bounced out-of-bounds off of a Marauder. Forced to foul, Millersville sent Paige Wright to the line with seconds left, and Wright deftly sank both to seal the win for her Vulcans.

Millersville held the Vulcans to just 29.2 percent shooting from the field. Robinson totaled a game-high 19 points and added five rebounds, three steals and three assists. Van Brakle scored 16 for her fourth consecutive game in double figures.

The loss was Millersville's first at home this season. The Marauders do not play at home again until Jan. 3.
