Marauders Bounce Back to Defeat Wolves

Cheyney, Pa. – Millersville responded after back-to-back PSAC East losses to defeat the Cheyney Wolves in three sets (25-13, 25-10, 25-16).

Sophomore Kelsi Ceriana had a huge match at the net recording 16 kills while hitting at an extremely efficient rate of .556. Grace Dawson bounced back and had 30 assists along with six digs. Katie Witwer had eight kills and three service aces in the match. Erika Green added five kills and seven digs in three sets Saturday.

Millersville jumped out to an early lead against Cheyney to the tune of 6-0 as the Wolves committed a trio of errors. When the Marauders committed an error of their own, Alaiya Cave recorded a kill before Ceriana responded with her second kill of the set. Witwer stepped up to serve and recorded three aces in a row to give Millersville a commanding 10-2 lead. It was Cheyney's turn to go on a run as Alaiya Cave recorded four kills in a row to cut the deficit to just five. Ceriana once again responded with one of her 16 match-high kills. The Marauders would extend their lead to eleven when Witwer and Kalescky sent home a pair of kills to make the score 19-9 in favor of the Marauders. Millersville would eventually finish off the Wolves when Ceriana scored the last three Marauder points via the kill to give Millersville the 25-13 set victory.

In the second set, Cheyney battled with Marauders early as Cave recorded a pair of kills to keep the wolves within two. With the score 6-4 in favor of Millersville, the Marauders took control taking the next seven points in a streak that included four kills. After Millersville committed an error, they responded with a pair of kills from Emily Kaledas and Katie Witwer. After Cheyney scored via a Marauder error, Kaledas and Green recorded consecutive kills to give Millersville a 17-6 lead. Ceriana made her presence felt once again sending home a trio of kills including the last one of the set to give Millersville a 25-10 set victory.

The third set began with the two sides trading points as Cheyney looked to mount a comeback.  In a set that featured ten ties, the Marauders trailed for the first time when Cave and Chelsea Hutson recorded consecutive kills to give Cheyney a 5-4 advantage. With the score 10-9 in favor of the Wolves, Renee Drawbaugh would send home her first kill of the match but Cheyney responded to take the next two points when Hutson sent home a kill and Millersville committed an error.  It was Cheyney's turn to falter as they committed a pair of errors and let the Marauders tie it up once again. After the Wolves took a one point lead, Erin Harman recorded a kill to tie the match up and give Millersville the momentum. The Marauders would take nine of the next ten points and force a reeling Cheyney to take a timeout. After the teams each committed an error, the score was 24-16 in favor of Millersville when Witwer sent home her eighth kill of the day to give the Marauders a decisive three-set victory.

With the win, Millersville climbs back to .500 overall on the season (15-15) and returns home Tuesday for their final home match of the year as they host Wilmington at 7 p.m.
