Millersville, Pa. - Kevin Wiggins caught three touchdown passes and Millersville's defense held Cheyney without an offensive score in Saturday's 26-6 victory at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Millersville (1-9, 1-6 PSAC) scored points in every quarter Wiggins finished with five catches for 81 yards and three scores, giving him eight touchdown catches in his last three games. Wiggins has scored every Millersville touchdown scored in that stretch.
J.J. Paige completed 18-of-31 passes for 192 yards and boosted his touchdown pass total to 12.
Cimirrow Moat also added 72 yards n 13 carries--his highest total since the season opener.
Cheyney's lone touchdown came on a fumble recovery return in the second quarter, and the Millersville defense allowed just 19 yards rushing while picking up nine tackles for loss. It is the third time this season Millersville has held an opponent to no more than 61 yards on the ground. The Marauders forced six three-and-outs including three in a row in the fourth quarter. Cheyney ran just 51 offensive snaps with only two drives extending beyond five snaps.
Sean Dugan recorded his first career interception, setting up a 29-yard
Evan Stahl field goal just before the first half horn. Just prior to that, he blocked a point after attempt that
Joey Pham scooped and raced 97 yards for two points. Pham added a third quarter interception of his own. It was his third of the season, tying him for a the team high.
The Marauders fired the opening salvo when on third-and-16 from the Cheyney 25, Paige fired a 25-yard strike to Wiggins in the end zone.
Cheyney took advantage of a pair of Marauder miscues in the second quarter, as Rashod Knight returned a fumble 38 yards for a touchdown to make the score 7-6. That's when Pham's return occurred, bringing the score to 9-6. Millersville drove to the Cheyney 1 on the next drive but
Ben Ortiz lost the handle on a rush attempt, and Cheyney recovered.
Cheyney's offense put together its longest drive of the game--12 plays for 62 yards--but on fourth-and-four from the Millersville 26, Dominick Trautz's pass fell incomplete. Dugan's interception provided Millersville outstanding field position with 42 seconds left, and Stahl booted a 29-yard as time expired.
The 12-6 lead remained until midway through the third when Paige and Wiggins capped a seven-play, 58-yard drive with a 19-yard hook up. The final score came with 10 minutes left in the game when Paige found Wiggins from 15 yards.
Wiggins, just a sophomore, improved his career catch total to 86 and his career touchdown total to 13. In the history of Millersville football, only Sean Scott (1997-2000) had more catches and touchdowns through as many games.
Millersville looks to string together wins in next week's season finale. The Marauders host Edinboro at 1 p.m.
