Millersville, Pa. - No. 1 Millersville scored a season-high four goals and registered its seventh consecutive shutout by topping Newberry 4-0 on Sunday at home. Freshman
Aliza Mizak led the Marauders with a pair of goals.
Just 24 hours earlier, Newberry (2-7) upset No. 5 Bloomsburg for its first-ever win over a ranked opponent, but Millersville dashed any hopes the Wolves had of a second-straight win early. An aggressive Marauder attack ripped five shots in the first 15 minutes and piled up 23 shots and 20 penalty corners. Along with Mizak's two tallies, freshman
Jessica Beard and sophomore
Tyler Bethke both scored their first career goals.
Millersville's (11-0) offensive pressure finally broke the Wolves' defense at the 16:19 mark. Mizak's fifth goal of the season was a dandy. The rookie weaved through a host of Newberry defenders and beat keeper Dakota Elzy with a running shot in the lower left corner of the cage.
Less than four minutes later Newberry faced a Marauder corner down a player after being called for a false start. Millersville took advantage.
Margaret Thorwart, who now has three goals and two assists in her last three games, pushed a shot that raced past a pulled out Elzy. Beard was positioned next to the right post and easily punched the ball into the goal.
Mizak's second goal came with 24 minutes left.
Haley Weaver set up the score during a two-on-one rush against Elzy. Weaver's initial shot was saved off the leg pads of Elzy, and Mizak quickly knocked the rebound into the goal. Mizak entered the game as the top freshman goal scorer in the PSAC and upped her season total to a team-best six.
With 15 minutes to play, Bethke pushed Millersville's lead to four when she redirected a pass from
Robyn Spatichia.
The Marauders did not allow a shot on goal for the sixth time in the last seven games. Millersville improved to 4-0 all-time against Newberry, winning the games by a combined score of 31-2. Newberry was limited to just two shots and drew one penalty corner.
Millersville faces a significant test on Wednesday with a road game at No. 2 Shippensburg. The series has been evenly matched since 2011 with Millersville holds a slight 6-5 edge.
