Shippensburg, Pa. - It was a Millersville field hockey kind of game. The No. 1-ranked Marauders and No. 4 Shippensburg Raiders engaged in a defensive struggle that reached overtime Wednesday at Robb Sports Complex. With just under two minutes left in the first extra session, Millersville junior
Olivia Hershey delivered the game-winning goal to keep the Marauders undefeated at 12-0.
Wednesday's shutout of Shippensburg 8-3, 3-2 PSAC) was the eighth in a row for the Marauders (12-0, 5-0 PSAC), extending its streak of minutes without a goal allowed to 657:52. During the streak, Millersville has outshot its opponents 131-26 and has allowed just five shots on goal. Shippensburg mustered three of those. Millersville also improved 3-0 in overtime games this season and are 15-3 in OT games since 2012.
Neither Millersville nor Shippensburg saw many quality scoring opportunities. Millersville held a 5-2 edge in shots in the first half but came up empty on six penalty corners. The rivals combined for just three shots and two corners in the second.
Marauder goalkeeper
Samantha Rumler had been forced to make just two saves in her first five starts, but she was key against Shippensburg, especially late. Raider Brooke Zeiders took a shot in the 63rd minute that Rumler turned away.
In the overtime session, the Raiders tested the Marauder defense early, drawing back-to-back penalty corners in the first two minutes. Two shots were taken with one getting blocked and the other saved by Rumler. Ship maintained possession for the majority of the overtime, drawing three corners to Millersville's one in the first 10 minutes.
But the Marauders were more opportunistic. Millersville drew two corners in the 83rd minute of play, and the second set up the winner. The ball was inserted by
Lauren Gerhart and Hershey did the rest. Hershey received the pass and dribbled past defenders into the middle of the circle. She then cranked a shot that rocketed past the Raiders' wall of defense and goalkeeper Taylor Webster.
The score was Hershey's fourth of the season and the third game-winner of her career. It was the only shot she took in the game. Only
Arianna Grays took more than one shot (2).
Millersville has won seven of the last 12 meetings with the Raiders including three in a row at Robb Sports Complex.
Wednesday's game against No. 4 Shippensburg was the start of a tough three-game stretch that includes a home game against No. 7 Limestone and a road game on Oct. 13 against No. 3 East Stroudsburg.
