Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team used two unanswered second half goals to propel its way to a 2-1 victory over Seton Hill on Saturday evening. The Marauder goals were scored just over a minute apart from each other as the nationally ranked Ville improve to 12-2-1 overall and 9-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Griffins overall record to 5-10-1 overall and 3-6 within conference play.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half as the teams combined to attempt eight shots within the period. The Marauders nearly got on the board in the 40th minute as
Ryan Phelps sent in a corner kick attempt that found the right foot of
Devin Rediker, but the shot attempt was saved by SHU keeper Cameron Evans.
The Griffins opened the second half and nearly scored in the 50th minute as Mitchell Eger's shot sailed directly into the post and was immediately cleared by the Black & Gold defense. On the counter attack, a Seton Hill foul led to a
Jaime Vazquez free kick attempt from just above the 18-yard box. Vazquez fired his first shot attempt into the Griffin defensive wall, once again gathered the ball and ripped a curving shot attempt into the belly of Evans.
Seton Hill found its breakthrough at the 61:31 mark when midfielder Harry Beattie fired a rocket from the top of the box that beat a diving
Kohl Orner. The goal marked the second of the season for Beattie.
The Griffin lead was short lived as the Marauders scored the equalizer just less than four minutes later. Once again on the counter attack,
Ben Johnston whipped a cross that sailed past the SHU defenders and found teammate
Chase Flickinger who fired the ball into the back of the net for his third career goal.
With momentum on its side, Millersville immediately regained possession just over a minute later as
Ryan Phelps chipped a pass onto teammate
Jaime Vazquez who caught Cameron Evans out of position and tapped his shot attempt into the back right corner of the goal. Vazquez now has 16 goals on the season, which ties him for third in all of Division II. Vazquez's 16 goals is also the fourth best mark in program history, seven behind record holder Sean Szerba.
