Two Unanswered Goals Doom Marauders
10/13/2015 6:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Shippensburg, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team saw Shippensburg score two second half unanswered goals that gave the Red Raiders a 2-1 victory at David See Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Marauders drop to both 4-8 overall and in the PSAC. Shippensburg improves to both 7-5-1 overall and in conference action.
Millersville came out of the gates as the aggressor over the home team and it nearly paid off in the 2nd minute when an Alexandrea Powell shot caused Shippensburg keeper Leah Roy into a tough save. Neither team was able to find a break through until the 43rd minute when Halie Parker redirected an Elizabeth Waite cross into the back of the net. The goal represented a team-leading eighth on the season for Parker who ranks fifth in the PSAC in goals scored. Parker also surpassed a career-high in scoring with 15 points; her previous high was 13 set a season ago.
The Marauders nearly doubled their lead right before the end of the first half as Parker whipped a cross into the Red Raider 18-yard box, but Victoria Kramer was unable to put enough power on the header to get it past the opposing keeper. The Ville finished the first half holding an 8-6 advantage in shots and carried their 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Shippensburg tilted the momentum of the match its way in the second half and was able find the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Ashley Weaver dribbled the ball up the right side of the pitch and laid the ball off to teammate Casey Rightmyer who's shot from outside of the box beat MU keeper Samantha Wolfe.
At the 67:48 mark, the Red Raiders struck again as Sharon Juarez gathered a loose ball within the Marauder box and slid her shot attempt to the right side of the net past Wolfe. Millersville made one last run to equalize in the final minute of play as Halie Parker received a flick pass and immediately fired the ball on net, but the shot attempt was corralled by Leah Roy.
The Black & Gold will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 with a PSAC road matchup against IUP. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
